Do certain characters embody/require a specific mindset or attitude?

I recently took a bboy workshop and the teacher told me that your mindset can really affect the way you dance or perform moves. So if I'm feeling aggressive, my steps will be faster or more sharp, and if I'm feeling passive my steps might be slower and more fluid.

Now PM has a lot of characters, and I thought about how this concept could be applicable to the game. Everyone talks about how characters have styles (i.e. campy vs aggressive), but what about mental states? Do certain characters perform better if the player is thinking a certain way, or can a person's thinking change the character's style in general? Or is Smash too dynamic a game to really be locked in a mindset? Discuss.

I've always been of the opinion that different players are naturally more inclined to do well with different types of characters. With so many different viable characters, the game pretty much has a wider "target audience" for high level play than similar titles.

Play with whoever fits your play style, and that you feel the most comfortable with.

After that is established, learn to master them on stage and offstage maxing out all of their abilities to the fullest potential.

I think the game is probably too dynamic to stay in either a full offensive or full zoning mindset, etc. In a single game you'll need to switch between styles as situations arise.

However, there are definitely characters that suit (or encourage) specific playstyles. Some characters are fast and requires a lot of moving around, ducking in and out of the action, and there are some characters that are tanky and want to overpower the opponent by taking trades and controlling certain space.

So you'd want to find a character that fits with your natural inclination of how you like to play. Do you like to go fast and push a lot of buttons, or play the game more slowly and mentally? Do you like to hang back and camp until you find a good opening or do you want to rush in balls-to-the-wall and possibly get punished if you aren't on point? Do you prefer power kills or gimps? Tech-chasing, punishing, good recovery, etc. All these things add up to a character you might pick.

given how unrestrictive the game is in general, a person's personality definitely shows in their play with any character they choose to play. some characters may be more inclined to fit with a certain playstyle, but i in no way think any character has a "correct" way of being played. if you want, you can play a defensive fox, an aggro samus, etc. the player's personality and mood definitely have a lot of influence on the style of play you see on screen and imo has a lot more to do with how you play than the character you're using.

I'm a calm person, but when I play smash I can sometimes be too aggressive which usually ends up as SDs
The style I play is slightly adjusted depending on how my opponent plays

My advice is to stay calm and try to predict your opponent's next move without being too predictable.

But how limited are players by their characters? Like an aggro samus isn't really aggro; meaning an aggro player is restrained by the character.
