Discussion of teh Starting Roster

Okay, with the inclusion of King Dedede, it's apparent that three Kirby reps could not be on the starting roster. There's no way that all of a franchise's characters would already be in the game from the get-go. Basically, this update makes you wonder what the starting roster will be. It certainly couldn't contain what we have on the site, most likely, Sakurai has decided to reveal the unlockable characters. Maybe he'll reveal a veteran from time to time but right now so far, we've only gotten unlockable characters since September.

I'm really beginning to wonder about how many characters the starting roster will have. I severely doubt the third party characters will be there and I highly doubt King Dedede will be there as long as Meta Knight is there. So, what will the starting roster be? Will C. Falcon or any of the SSB64 characters that were previously unlockable in 64 be unlockable again? Or will they be apart of the starting roster? And, who exactly will be on the starting roster? Who's unlockable of the newcomers we know now? These questions remain to be unanswered and probably won't be answered until either a later update or until the game is out.

Speculate I dare say, SPECULATE!

My present guess would be that all the known veterans and all the newcomers revealed up until Diddy will be starters. Metaknight and beyond will be unlockable, and thats the reason Metaknight's update was delayed.

There will probably be a few more veteran starters too - Captain Falcon surely (since hes a two-time veteran who was a starter in Melee), perhaps also Mr Game & Watch, Jigglypuff, Ness (if Lucas hasn't bumped him out), and/or Marth. Maybe even Luigi, though I think he'll remain unlockable personally.

If a veteran's not confirmed by the time we see another newcomer (likely the last one we'll see before Japan release), I'm going to assume that outside third party characters, that will EXACTLY represent the starting roster.

What about C. Falcon and such. Likely a hidden character.

I don't think thats apparent at all. In fact, why couldn't three Kirby reps be on the starting roster? Not only is your speculation speculation, but the facts its based on are speculation also.

Why would the next newcomer we see be the last announced before the Japan release? Any basis for that assertion?

Just a prediction. See how even the roster looks on the site? I don't see it getting any bigger, and unless they confirm a veteran returning between now and December I don't see either expanding, especially if we don't get C Falcon before the most likely last newcomer.

I also predict a total slot roster of 40 (merging all personas and such like ZSS/Samus, Pokeymanz trainer is one character).

It's a safe bet though. I personally couldn't see that happening (Having 3 Kirby reps, without having at least one unlockable).

Why couldn't Sakurai reveal unlockable characters?

right now, not counting Zamus as a separate character (rather as a part of Samus) and taking the revealed 3rd parties out of there, there are 20 characters on there. Now, from what I've heard, Sakurai said a while back that he would not reveal any secret characters until the game's launch. Assuming this means until Japanese launch (2 weeks before the Americas get it), that means that, if this is true, then we have a total of 20 starters.

Of course, the theory that all characters revealed after Diddy Kong require unlocking is a viable theory, but there's always the chance that we'll have only TEN or so starters (Mario, Peach, Zelda, Kirby, Pikachu, Samus, Fox, Link, DK, and Diddy...essentially all the heroes) and everyone else has to be unlocked through SubSpace Emissary (for example, to unlock Bowser you have to beat him with DK/Diddy in SubSpace, etc)

The last theory is the least likely, since that would alienate people who just want to play the multiplayer, but I still think it's not too far-fetched to consider.

you wil start out with snake, unlock sonic in mario's adventure, and find megaman(FTW) much later on...

In my opinion, Meta Knight wont be unlockable, but Ike will. Diddy wont be, Dedede will. Sonic will be, along with Snake, and so will Pokemon trainer. I dont have any guidelines for these predictions, i just feel it is going to turn out that way. 3rd party will be unlockable, as we all think.

I think I would like it best if you started out with only Mario and Pit playable in Vs., and unlocked most of the characters though Subspace Em.

Yeah, but he already said that all 3rd party characters are going to be unlockable, so clearly he isnt sticking to your rule.

I reckon there will be a starting roster update at the end of this year. And rest will be hidden.

I can't imagine Dedede being a starter. I'm thinking at the very least, Snake, Sonic, and D3 will be unlockable of those announced so far.

Maybe there are even MORE Kirby characters? Goey, anyone? And Dedede was pretty much a shoe-in anyways, maybe Sakurai thought that since he's so popular and wanted, he should be shown off early to promote more hype.

Or maybe he's showing unlockables now, or going to soon, since I think it'll be pretty hard NOT to show them with the delayed release date.

I think hes telling us about some of these characters because he feels bad about the delay...

think about it, we havent heard some normals yet like luigi and c falcon... which he was prob waiting till the last minute to show off.. That three month difference had to have some space for updates right?

who knows we probobly wouldnt have even heard about D3 till the game came out if the release date was the earlier predicted dec 3.

nah he will probobly reveal a few more but if he keeps going at the rate he is there will most likely be a bunch left. maybe all the easy to unlock toons? who knows...

The thing is, we know that Dedede can't be in the starting roster. I just don't think he will be. I can believe some of the veteran fighters becoming starters and maybe some remaining unlockable but Dedede, a new character, and the very likely last Kirby rep in the starting roster? No way.

I guess we'll have to wait and see for the next character update to be sure. However, right now, I'm betting that he is starting to reveal the unlockables or he already has been. Either way, I'm happy.

Yeah i agree they're not going to let us start with 3 kirby characters...and i kinda feel like lucas won't be a starter either

Yeah, I must admit, today's update kinda threw me for a loop... I was one of those people who was certain that every character, excluding Snake and Sonic, who had been revealed so far would be part of the starting roster. Seeing three characters from the Kirby franchise (and no, I *really* don't think any other Kirby characters will be making it in)... hmm.

I doubt any character who was a starter in either SSB and/or SSBM will become unlockable. CF and Ness likely became starters in Melee because they were the sole (and main) representatives of their franchises, so to make them unlockable again would be a bit... silly.

Yeah i can't see anyone from SSB64 or melee becoming unlockable again...that just wouldn't make much sense
