Discovered something weird - difference in attack with z-canceling

So a friend (newb) was asking how to d-air to up-tilt with Kirby consistently without knocking his opponent away with the d-air, and I didn't really know what he was talking about. So after playing around in training mode trying to reproduce what he was explaining to me, I found out that when you z-cancel Kirby's d-air and f-air, your opponent doesn't get knocked back when you land, but if you don't z-cancel, he does get knocked back. I found out that he didn't know what z-canceling was.

Does anyone know why this is? Are there other moves where there's a difference between a z-cancel and no z-cancel? Could there be any strategic use to this?

Yeah this is sort of well known by the higher level people of ssb64. In my opinion Jigglypuff's down-air is one of the more useful ones because no z-cancel down-air has low lag for no z-cancel and very slightly pops them up. It could situationally be more useful against DI whores if you aren't that good at chasing your opponent

Pikachu's f-air knocks them back a little if you don't z-cancel ( i think)

Not z-cancelling with kirby is interesting because if you down-air and don't cancel, Kirby actually will duck beneath grabs. If your opponent tries to grab you and backthrow, some will stand looking in the opposite direction and will realize too late that he didn't backthrow you and you can then up-tilt 4-5 times.

Yeah, I find the fact that Kirby gets a bonus for not z-canceling his aerials hilarious.

Not to be a douchebag or anything but I don't get how you don't already know this just from experience playing the game. Like S2J said, this comes in handy with Jiggly because her dair pops you up a little bit and has very little landing lag even without z-canceling.

Kirby's fair will also knock people away but it has the same effect if you hit them with the last hit of the fair. The last hit is the one that knocks them away.

This is a cool little thing too that annoyed me once or twice facing a kirby who would (don't know if on purpose or not) miss some zcancels on a dair, but it seriously didn't matter because I just grabbed twice from then on and punished it every time. Now it never bothers me. There is no advantage to missing a z-cancel on kirby's dair if your opponent knows the game well.

It works with all of Kirby's aerials.
I think the only other moves which do this are Jigg's dair and Pika's fair.

Works with Falcon's F-Air, if anyone can think of a solid use for it...

I once did it and knocked someone over, then grabbed them as they rolled behind me. But that was mainly a reflex thing.

Doesn't Falcon's Fair knock them over anyways
The landing hitbox on Falcon kick makes for funny 22% Falcon Kick combos :bee:
