Disc Read Error

For some reason, my Brawl disc won't load matches most of the time. It gets to the CSS screen or SSS screen then goes silent. When I select a stage or press start on the CSS, I get an error that says either "Disc could not be read, consult Wii Operations Manual" or "Please insert Super Smash Brothers Brawl disc". I know it isn't the disc laser as other games (SMG, SMG2, Mario Kart) work fine. Is there a way to fix this or should I just go and start using a USB loader? (this isn't a preferable option, as I don't want to spend $20+ on a 8GB usb drive)
