Difficulties with Mandriva Linux someone help?

My computer crashes often while running mandriva, it just freezes up and all you can do is move the mouse (maybe) and you cant force quit the application.

This never happens on my windows partition.

I'm running Mandriva Linux 2009.1, I don't really wish to fix the crashing as I read that it is probably the OS version itself but I would like to know how to do a clean install of Mandriva Linux 2010 inplace of 2009.1 (not an upgrade.)

I would like to do all this without harming my windows partition.

Used it, loved it.

Can't use it though because my wifi doesn't work oob

So i'm kinda 'forced' to use mandriva until i can figure out how to fix it, or until they (canonical) can figure it out.
