Many people are speculating on which character will be a starter and which will be unlockable. Which is all well and good, but I have a different idea. With different newcomers featured on the covers of the different versions, will the separate versions have different characters to start with? The SSB4 Wii U cover features Wii Fit Trainer, while The SSB4 3DS cover features Little Mac and Rosalina, while both feature Villager. Will the 3DS version start with Villager, Rosalina, and Little Mac while the Wii U version starts with Villager, WFT, and different newcomer we haven't even seen yet? Or different veterans? Or am I spouting nonsense? And who do YOU think will be in the starting roster(s)?

I know that this probably isn't the case, but here is how I think they should have done it, in terms of newcomers:

Starters on Both Versions:
Mii Fighters

Starters on 3DS Version:
Greninja
Robin
Lucina
Palutena
(Chorus Kids)

Starters on Wii U Version:
Rosalina & Luma
Villager
Wii Fit Trainer
Little Mac
(Shulk)

Unlockable on Both Versions:
Mega Man
Pac-man

The starters on the Wii U version would be the unlockables on the 3DS version, and vice versa.

I think Rosalina will be unlockable on the Wii U version but not the 3DS version.

It actually won't matter either way. The roster will be the same for both, so even if different characters are unlocked, you'll still know who to expect.

I can see the Wii U version either having the characters unlocked already, since it won't be a mystery who the characters are anymore, or if you connect the 3DS with the Wii U all the characters/custom parts you have unlocked will transfer over. That way people who didn't have the 3DS version can unlock stuff, and people who had it don't have to do everything over again.

I was in favor of different roster distributions back when we thought the WiiU and 3DS versions were getting released on or near the same day. Once we found out that wasn't true, it ceased to matter.

I like @ J JCAndre 's idea of being able to link the 3DS version with the WiiU version to unlock stuff for people who have already done so. Sounds good. If that's the case, the starting roster should be the same for both versions, imo.

I agree with this, that would be a much cooler distinction if the release window was the same.
Even so, it would be kinda cool to have the starting roster vary by version, but I doubt they would.

And now I've got this crazy idea stuck in my head that they could give us the Original Eight and let you choose, on first boot, up to fourteen or so additional starters, with the rest becoming hidden.

No, I wouldn't care for that at all. Most people would just choose their favorites to start with, leaving the characters they dislike to be locked away. Then why would you spend any extra time trying to unlock the others? No, I like having a set roster to work with. Invariably, some locked characters I will love and some I won't; but if there's a good mix, there's more incentive to do it.

I go for completion regardless, this would just reduce my desire to ignore my friends and play single player until I unlock Robin and Megaman.

I was discussing it with a friend and he mentioned the shop-type unlocks that, for instance, Soul Calibur 4 uses. Though I think something like that combined with the Advance Wars type store (meet the requirements, THEN purchase) might also work. Though that'd probably be better for stages and cosmetics than characters.

I think there should definitely be the same starting roster on both versions. It doesn't make sense to switch it up.
They are 2 completely separate games, and just because one comes out before the other doesn't mean they should include most of those unlockables. Remember a lot of people will only be playing the Wii U version, and some probably years from now, so they have no idea who the roster is. Should keep it unison so everyone has the same level of excitement of unlocking characters.

Starters

:4mario::4dk::4link::4samus::4yoshi::4kirby::4fox::4pikachu::4bowser::4peach::4zelda::4sheik::popo::4marth::4pit::4dedede::4zss::4olimar::4diddy::wario::lucas::4charizard::4villager::4wiifit::rosalina::4littlemac::4greninja::4palutena::4robinm::4mii:

Unlockable

:4luigi::jigglypuff::4falcon::ness2::falco::gw::ganondorf::4metaknight::4myfriends::4lucario::4tlink::rob::wolf::4sonic::4megaman::4pacman::4lucina:

The reason Marth, Rosalina & Luma and Little Mac are starters is because they are on the official box art. Unlockable characters have never appeared on the official box artwork.

Meta Knight should have been unlockable in the first place.

Pretty much every character from the demo are starters. Greninja I can see being a secret charcter, but makes sense a starter.
Mega Man and Sonic definitely need to be unlockable. 3rd party starters doesn't feel right.

Ike and Marth switch it up this time around (Ness and C. Falc were starters in Melee after being unlockable in 64). Marth is the face of Fire Emblem and definitely the most recognizable, he needs to start. With Ike's buffed up look he deserves to be unlockable. However switching him out with Robin makes sense.

Villager and Wii Fit Trainer are starter material. Palutena as well. Rosalina and Mac are on the boxart so they start. Greninja is a good starter Pokemon rep. Robin can go either way. There definitely needs to be 2 Fire Emblem starters. Since Marth needs to be a starter, Lucina would be a terrible choice for a 2nd starter. Robin is there over Ike to throw in a completely new character.
And Miis should start because you already have all the options there, and so much customizable attributes to them that they need to be available from the start.

I highly doubt there will be different starting rosters on both versions, though the idea is intriguing & I wouldn't complain if it came to fruition. If it did happen, I could see both versions starting with Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, & Little Mac with the 3DS having Robin or Lucina & the Wii U having Rosalina

I think it would be cool, but if you can just unlock everyone if you have everyone unlocked on the 3ds version it won't matter for most people.

So far, this is what I'm thinking:

Starter: :4mario::4peach::4bowser::rosalina::4pikachu::4charizard::4greninja::4myfriends::4marth::4link::4zelda::ganondorf::4dk::4kirby::4dedede::4fox::4littlemac::4megaman::4mii::4olimar::4pit::4samus::4villager::4wiifit::4yoshi::lucas::popo::wario:
Unlockable: :ness2::gw::4falcon::4diddy::falco::wolf::4lucario::jigglypuff::4lucina::4luigi::metaknight::4palutena::4pacman::4robinm::4sheik::4sonic::4tlink::4zss:(Newcomer 1) (Newcomer 2)

I think we've still got around 2 unrevealed newcomers to go - possibly 3, at most. One at the least.

Since Sheik and ZSS are now separate characters, I feel like they're gonna be unlockables this time around. Give the Zelda series the three holders of the triforce to start. I think both Robin and Lucina will be unlockable, and Ike and Marth will be the two starter FE characters - Robin is just so unique and potentially difficult that I think he's better off getting unlocked later, for when the player has more "experience." And Lucina because lol why would they have both Marth and Lucina as starters for FE.
Cuts to the roster here: :snake::squirtle::rob::ivysaur::pt:

While we're doing this:

Starter: :4mario::4peach::rosalina::4bowser::4kirby::4dedede::4pikachu::4charizard::4olimar::4pit::4villager::4wiifit::4yoshi::4link::4zelda::4marth::4myfriends::4littlemac::4fox::4dk::4diddy::4mii::popo::ness2::warioc:
I moved Ness to starter because his game is more recent, and while I'd prefer if Rosalina was hidden, box-art makes it look like she (and Marth) are default. On the Marth note, it would make more sense to me to make Lucina default (as a simpler Marth), but I also understand findally making Marth default.

Hidden::4falcon::4greninja::4lucario::jigglypuff::4luigi::4lucina::4robinm::4palutena::4pacman::4megaman::4sonic::snake::4tlink::ganondorf::4sheik::4metaknight::4zss::falco::wolf::lucas::gw::rob:
Swapped Ness with Lucas. I don't see a reason more than 2 Mons would be default, so I'd lean toward Greninjajaja being hidden. As much as I'd love to play Robin out of the box, I expect he'll be hidden. Palutena could go either way, but I'd rather she be hidden (just as I wish Diddy were hidden, unless we get a 3rd DK character). Meta should be hidden, and I feel that the character splits make sense to be hidden (Sheik and Zamus) since they're now individuals. Secondary spacefurries can be hidden as usual, and all third parties are traditionally hidden, though I'd not mind playing Megaman off the bat either.

If some miracle gives us back Roy and Mewtwo, I expect both to be hidden.

Doesnt matter to me, because we can only assume unlocking on the 3ds will transfer over to the wii u.

Wow im now second guessing this will happen. Will i have to unlock all the characters again? What about ones ive built up with customizations

I think the characters in the e3 demos are the starters, so yeah there will be some variation, like Link and Yoshi. With so many *assumed* characters, a 20 character starting roster could be normal.

Maybe I will also play this game.

Starters:
:4bowser::4charizard::4dedede::4diddy::4dk::4fox::4kirby::4littlemac::4link::4mario::4marth::4mii::4olimar::4peach::4pikachu::4pit::4robinm::rosalina::4samus:

Unlockables:
:4falcon::4greninja::4myfriends::4lucario::4lucina::4luigi::4megaman::4metaknight::4palutena::4pacman::4sheik::4sonic::4tlink::4zss::falco::jigglypuff::lucas::gw::rob::wolf: (newcomer) (newcomer)

I don't want to insta-unlock characters on the Wii U version if I've unlocked them all on 3DS. I want to experience unlocking them all over again. :p

All of these speculations with Ganondorf as a starter makes my stomach turn.

MEGA MAN AS A STARTER??? SERIOUSLY??

I think the version will have different starters. Maybe based on the home console.

For example, I believe Toon Link will be stater and Link will be unlockable in 3DS and vice-versa in the WiiU, because Toon link is the 'home' character of the portable zelda series.

Just from the fact that both Toon Link and Luigi were only shown on the demo for the 3DS version could mean that they are unlockable on the Wii U and start on 3DS. Then again so was Yoshi sooooo..... who knows.

Personally, I think starters will be the same in both versions, and deep inside, I hope they're very few. I would go with:

:4mario::4peach::4link::4zelda::4dk::4pikachu::4greninja::4littlemac::4villager::4yoshi::4olimar::4samus::4robinm::4kirby::4pit::4mii: + Wario and Ness maybe even less

All others being unlockables. But this is what I would do. I think the starter roster will be around 35 characters.

Perhapes this may happen, the starter line up might not be the same in both version, so we can chat in this forum less than a month and find out the 3ds starter, we will never know if Sakurai will reveal the Wii U starter line up during the 3ds release or not.

Smaller than Brawl's starting roster, includes a 3rd party, and does NOT include either Fox or Yoshi, who have been default in every single game so far.

Only reasons I think your statement is, at least, incomplete.
Ness and Captain Falcon throw any logic about unlockables out the window. Who says we couldn't have a 3rd party character on the starting roster this time around? I wouldn't be surprised if Pacman was a starter, it'd be a nice way for Sakurai to show his appreciation of the Namco team.

That's so god damn terrible.

Just because they picked those characters for promotion doesn't mean they will be playable in the invitational tournament.
Just want to point this out. If you said that before the tournament you would have been wrong.

I would gladly be proven wrong (I mean, Marth's on the box art), but my speculation is that we'll stick generally to the trends.

Also, nice avatar, love Awkward Zombie.

Yeah the roster isn't going to be that small most likely. We've never had more unlockables than starters.

But I didn't and you changed what I said... so what's the point?
The promotional material for the Tournament/Smash Fest showcased all the playable characters before we knew which ones would be the playable characters. So I wager it will be the same way here.
