Differences between Lucina and Marth? (and even Roy?)

Hello people!

So in Melee, the duplicates characthers were Dr. Mario and Mario, Fox and Falco, Ganondorf and Cpt. Falcon, Pikachu and Pichu and finally Marth and Roy (Have i missed any?). I could easily see the differences inside those pairs of characthers, like Dr. Mario was slightly heavier but was dealing greater damage (I think), Falco had a shine that was sending enemies staright up and his Side-B could meteor smash, and so on for each pair...

But Marth, Roy and Lucina? What were their differences except Roy has some fancy fire effects added to his attacks? Also, as I took the example from Melee because I used to play it a lot, my question searches an answer for Wii U version.

I mean, I can see differences with Falco and Fox, but Marth and Lucina? They seem to have the same moveset and all that stuff, except the model and the voice-acting...

So, thanks for answering and all have a good day at smashing!

Marth and Lucina are really similar. Marth has a tipper (more damage and thus also knockback if he hits with the tip of his sword) while Lucina doesn't. Roy has kind of an inverse tipper: More damage if he hits with the blade of his sword. Roy also has different moves and is much less similar, for instance his up-B goes at more of an angle. Competitively, Marth sees much more tournament use than Roy and Lucina.

Roy has different attributes compared to Marth and Lucina too. Slightly heavier, runs faster but walks slower, etc. For more info, see this:

To put it most simply, Lucina deals the same damage at all parts of her sword, while for Marth, he deals the most damage at the tip and least at the base.

Roy has considerably more differences (like Roy is to Marth as Luigi is to Mario), which you can look up.

And welcome to the site!

Lucina is a girl, Marth is a pretty girl. (note the short hair)

Hope that clears things up for ya.

Well yeah! Although it was pretty much explained before me, I would like to point you to an old thread I made detailing the differences in KO percents between Marth and Lucina, which can be very useful to gauge their differences in overall power.

Anyway, the differences between Marth and Lucina are pretty much these:
  • Lucina's hurt and hitboxes are overall slightly skewed downwards when compared to Marth due to her being shorter, which does make her a very slightly smaller target, but it does also mean she has slightly less vertical range on her moves (though it's only pixels off). Their horizontal range is identical. This can be deceiving since Lucina's sword reaches shorter than Marth's even though the hitboxes are identical;
  • Their moves are all identical. What changes is the fact Marth has a very powerful sweetspot in the Tipper, and a very weak sourspot in the rest of his sword, while Lucina's is consistently very strong. This somewhat changes the dynamic of their gameplay especially when related to combos. There are quite a few things one can do that the other can't, or things that both can do but one does better, etc.
The differences between Marcina and Roy, though, are plentyful, since Roy has been Luigified for Smash 4:
  • Roy has a sweetspot in the Hilt, and a sourspot in the rest of his sword. It's roughly as strong as Marth for both, but from what I've seen and heard, Roy's Hilt is noticeably bigger than Marth's, at the cost of being far harder to space;
  • A lot of Roy's moves are different or behave differently:
    • Jab, Side Tilt, Side Smash, Down Air, Forward Air, Back Air and Neutral Special are completely different;
    • The rest behave similarly but have differences in behaviour. Side Special has stricter timing, Down Tilt has faster FAF, Counter is stronger, Up Special is multi-hit and very horizontal, Up Smash is multi-hit, and then there is the obvious difference in sweetspots that change how his moves are applied.
General consensus says that Marth>Lucina>Roy, with Roy sadly being placed near the bottom of the Tier List, and Marth and Lucina being placed rather close together somewhat close to the Top of the Tier List, nowadays.
I hope I helped just a little bit!
