Hey,

was just wondering if anyone could name the differences between Fox & Falco in the newest version or P:M, I only know a few (laser, upsmash, upb) but I'm certain there has to be more. I don't own Melee and have barely played it so I don't know the differences between them in Melee either.

Many of the moves look alike but, as you've noticed, work differently. The differences are nearly identical to Melee, as the characters have barely changed from that game.

Down-B and Down-Air are probably the biggest ones that change the way the characters are played entirely. Down-B, colloquially called "shine" sends at different angles: Fox's sends the opponent at a downward-horizontal angle and Falco's sends the opponent upward. This means the move is used for vastly different purposes for each character. Fox's can be used to combo the opponent across the stage and can be performed off-stage for a gimp. Falco's, since it sends the opponent up, is used in combination with his Down-Air to do devastating combos on stage.

Falco's down-air is a spike and gets him a lot of his kills, whereas Fox's d-air is good, but isn't a spike and he doesn't tend to approach with it like Falco.

Really, watching any high level match on YouTube you should be able to see the differences in playstyle. Here, check out this one:

....Just out of curiousity.

@ Sylarius Sylarius Do you play Vindictus?

But the differences lies in the properties in their moves and speed.

Some of the most notable differences being...
  • Falco has a slower run speed
  • Falco has a higher jump (I think)
  • Falco's Dair spikes the enemy
  • Falco's Dtilt is insanely powerful compared to fox's
  • Falco's shine sends enemies upwards (while foxes sends them sideways)

And don't forget lasers. Falco's lasers give him an incredibly reliable way to approach opponents, Fox's are just mildly irritating.

Falco's got a more stunted recovery and a shorter half jump. Think of Falco as the stronger but less defensive counterpart to Fox, I guess. Also, their combos work very differently. Some things like uthrow to uair with Fox can't be necessarily done with Falco.

Falco is a bird, and Fox is some kind of dog-like creature
