Being a diabetic isn't easy, we have to prick our fingers and make them bleed, have shots that could make us bleed and we have to watch what we eat. None of this is the worst part about being a diabetic...no, we grow use to the pain of the constant bleeding and needles. What IS the worst part is Diet Coke, the worst ****ing drink ever made. Restaurants clearly hate Diabetic customers and get Coke and their nasty drinks to sponsor them. Instead of having Diet Barq's or Coke Zero or better yet getting Pepsi to sponsor them, Diabetics have to deal with Diet Coke, AKA Hell in a bottle.

To describe Diet Coke: Incredibly bitter, devoid of any positive flavors, not very fizzy and worst of all is often the only diabetic friendly drink at the majority of restaurants. Have the restaurant employees and owners not tried this ****? I'm pretty sure if they did they would beg Pepsi to sponsor them and if Pepsi said no get Diet Barq's, Diet Coke's polar opposite: Incredibly sweet, has many wonderful flavors, very fizzy and worst of all you can only get it at Dollar Movie theaters and SOME Burger King restaurants...or by buying the overpriced canned drinks.

What happens often too is that Diet Coke is the only diet drink sold at stores and if the Fountain version tastes painfully bad, then the canned/bottled version is gagworthy. Imagine the flavor of your least favorite drink multiplied 10 times and you get bottled Diet Coke. I hate Coke drinks in general, but even by Coke standards Diet Coke is bitter. Why do restaurants only have this if it tastes so bad? I know I'm not the only diabetic who hates this gross ****ty drink, so why the **** is it served at 95% of restaurants (Atleast in the USA)? TRY YOUR ****ING DRINKS BEFORE DECIDING TO STOCK THEM!!!!

Coke Zero is also a diet coke, but tastes way better. It has higher quality sweeteners, flavor and fizz.

Who else hates this ****ty drink?

Oh yes, it's all that my mom used to stock when I lived with her. Tastes positively dreadful. I can't really understand the appeal, but different strokes I guess. Mom opened a can once and a live bee flew out of it, which really kinda put the nail in the coffin on that.

My entire family bar myself is diabetic (type 1 & 2), so I've grown up on Diet Coke. Honestly, I can't stand regular coke, or any "regular" drink for that matter, there's just so much sugar; and it's sticky too. >_<

Honestly this thread is the exact opposite for me.

That said, I do get annoyed when I'm at a restaurant and it's flat. Which I attribute to them not refilling it due to lack of popularity.

I'll admit, coming from a diabetic, if I had to pick between putting in a crapton of insulin and not. I'll go with diet. Even if the taste can be off.

Wow, I did not expect so many diabetics here. Anyways, any other diet drink is better then Diet Coke, Diet Mountain Dew is the best one and Diet Barq's is tied with Diet Dew. Luckily I have an understanding mother who makes sure I drink as little of it (And Diet Dr. Pepper) as possible. Diet Coke could easily be discontinued because Coke Zero makes it irrelevant with better everything.

Truth is binary, not a continuum.
It's pretty silly, if people want to diet, why don't they just drink water?

Random warning: Juice is actually rather unhealthy (loaded with sugar, devoid of fiber), contrary to popular belief.

Coca-Cola tastes awful in general, and the diet kind of any soda is always worse. #Pepsi4Lyfe #PepsiOrangeSliceSierraMistSquad

Oh boo hoo you have to actually drink healthy drinks instead of trying to drink carcinogens/unknown chemicals in a can.

I get milk at restaurants if I can free refills [which is almost never], and if not, it's like 90% of the time H20 for me. Hi-C Fruit Punch is also delicious. I'll drink soda but I rarely go out of my way to get it (the once every two months or whatever cravings can still sucker punch me and make me drink like 4 glasses of Pepsi or Coca-Cola, but those are rather rare).

On a more sympathetic note, Diet Coke has this weird filmy taste, but you're still really darn picky about your fake sugar if you think Diet Coke is bad, and not merely not good [and I think Diet Coke is rather tasty].

I totally agree with the OP; Diet Coke is absolutely awful. The reason why is because Diet Coke is made with a different recipe than regular Coke. If you need a diet drink I'd go with Coke Zero since that's based off of the original recipe.

But I'm not really a soda person anymore, period.

That's awfully narrow-minded and unsympathetic. Don't you believe that people have the right to make their own choices about what they eat or drink and that they ultimately know what's best for them?

Diet Rite isn't my favorite drink, but it's better then any of Coke's ****ing awful products with the exception of Diet Barq's and their regular soda.

Did you read the latter half of my post? Also Booster could just take a shot of Coca-Cola and a shot of insulin... wait that joke's probably just offensive so I'll strike it through.

No.

First, are you type I or type II? If you're type I, I'm really sorry, I should apologize for assuming things. I'm sorry you have to go through life pricking yourself every day when you did nothing to deserve it and I hope restaurants change.

If you're type II, then my "No" is all I'm going to say (because I want to be at least somewhat civil).

I'm type 1, I have to bleed myself, I frequently bleed from shots and when they don't bleed they sting and 30 minutes ago I had a blood sugar of 39, I was only 9 years old when I was diagnosed, I was devastated and NONE of my friends came to see me in the hospital for support which didn't help. I didn't want any presents I just wanted to see my friends while I was hooked up to several ****ing machines while my room mate kept me up in the night and day.

I don't know what has been worse, living these past 9 (almost 10) years with diabetes or people like YOU who think making jokes and mean remarks about Chronic Illnesses are funny or justifiable in any way.

Want to avoid excessive sugar intake and more insulin shots? Then drink water! Yes, glorious H20. My favorite beverage and it should be your's too! Tap or bottled. Recommended with ice for best serving.

Booster, the way you described Diet Coke in the second paragraph of the OP reminds me how any alcoholic beverage that isn't thoroughly mixed with some fruit or sweets flavor tastes and feels.

I'm sorry.

That said, everyone I've ever met who's complained about bad-tasting soda who was also diabetic was type II, so I'm rather jaded about it and usually just make those obnoxious "First-world problem" statements. But not here.

However, diet soda is actually really unhealthy, so I'd hope you also drink plenty of other drinks in order to better keep yourself healthy (especially since you already do have a chronic illness).

I also like water, as others have said. Best part: in a lot of places, it's completely, 100% FREE! Thought you can't be expected to just change your tastes (how convenient would that be)?

Now that you mention it, I tried alcohol when I was 5 and Diet Coke tastes much the same way...

Yeah, straight-up alcohol is absolutely ****ing gross. It phases out candy for most people. I don't understand the appeal of such a bitter, blanchy beverage.

When my family used to vacation to Aruba, my brother and I would always have the "virgin" drinks and they were delicious. Though one family vacation to Cape Cod, we were serving dinner and my older cousin was blending piña coladas and I had a full glass. It was mixed with rum, which made it taste noticeably "inky". The drink would've been better off without it. Yet it was so subtle that I didn't mind it.

On a side note... some alcohol is delicious. Not a big drinker or anything, but stuff like rekorderlig I better tasting than strawberry soda.

Don't get me wrong though, alcohol ruins people. Great uncle suffers from alcoholism and it is painful to see the guy even exist.

Don't drink kids! Smoke weed instead. Do exercise instead!

I knew it was Booster the moment I saw ****ing.

I'm not big on Diet Coke, to be honest. Worst soda I ever had was Diet Caffeine-Free Pepsi.

Coke Zero is okay.

Love regular Coke more but I usually drink Zero these days for obvious reasons. Coke has 42g of sugar in a 355 ml can here in Canada, I know it varies around the world.

I once had one of those Mexican cokes at a burrito place called Anna's Taqueria. It comes in a glass bottle like you see in adverts all the time. Definitely notice the cane sugar's there and not the high fructose corn syrup. Gives it a refreshing pep of fizz.

If you're at a place that offers it, you should definitely buy one! :reverse:

Coming from a type one diabetic, sure, it's possible to have regular soda and a take a shot of insulin (I've done it myself). The issue comes is carbohydrates. Many sodas tend to have a lot of them (stuff like orange and grape soda alone can have around 60-70 carbs. Essentially two cups of Frosted Flakes with milk). So, if one could get an alternative that while not as healthy at least saves you a shot, we'll do it.
