He never said anything regarding clones.

Clones should be no surprise though.

There was a rumor that he said there'd be no clones in Brawl, but Sakurai never said so. Sure, Brawl was far better about the clone thing, but there were still a couple.

The closest I can think of is that he said that when considering potential characters, it's more important to see what new things they can bring than the character's popularity.

Sakurai never said there would be no clones in this game. This sounds another case where people are putting words in Sakurai's mouth yet again.

In fact, the only real clone in Brawl is Toon Link. Wolf and Lucas are quite different from Fox and Ness despite similar Special Moves and Final Smashes.
Falco and Ganondorf had changes to make them more distinguished from Fox and Captain Falcon.

Ah I don't know, that's a little harsh on the little guy, I actually think his head is rather round. On the other hand, size-wise he could sort of look like an upside-down cone.

Oh, and no, he never said anything about there not being any clones. He did however say that newcomers have to be really unique in what they can do in order to get in.

I hope Sakurai puts more thought into Toon Link's moveset this time. The fact he was announced so early gives me some (false) hope that he might be a little bit different from Link this time... a last-minute filler clone in Melee, okay, I can overlook that since Sakurai was adding more characters in the last minute.... a last-minute replacement clone in Brawl, okay, I can overlook that again since Sakurai replaced Young Link with Toon Link in the last minute... purposefully keeping him a clone in SSB4? What the hell, Sakurai? It is not like Toon Link is a last-minute clone in SSB4. What's his excuse for remaining a clone besides that bulls**t rule about child Links having to be the same as adult Links? IMO, three strikes and you are out of SSB5. As you can probably tell, I am ironically disappointed that one of my Brawl mains is back in SSB4.

If Toon Link is a clone, it won't come off as a surprise to me. He's pretty much just a shorter and faster Link with a lot of the same, but also some similar attacks. Ganondorf being greatly different than Captain Falcon, now that's something that should be different this time around, but I won't hold my breath.
