I haven't had this issue myself, although I'm curious to if anyone outside of an original model 3DS owner actually had this occur. I have a little theory that maybe the original model 3DS had a not as durable Circle Pad as from my googling I couldn't find anything on the XL or 2DS.

For those that did break it (regardless of which model), how rough were you using the system? I wonder if it is the Circle Pad itself or the end user.

I had the game since launch and to this day, my circle pad still works like new.
Of course, I bought a New 3DS XL simply for the amiibo features.

I didn't have this problem, and neither did anybody else who had the game that I knew. I don't think the stick between the board and the pad itself was thick enough... And people seemed to think that hammering it in a direction is required to perform a smash attack, as there was no other way to do so. Infact I sometimes did smash attacks trying to do tilts, so I don't see why they would move it so hard. ._.

My only assumption is that they probably were too accustomed to the flick nature of Analog Sticks with Smash Bros. so they probably did the same quick motion repeatedly.

Probably... The Pad is nowhere near as durable as the GCN sticks. Plus, you can get a bit lost in the moment and really get into the game, especially if it's close.

I completely wrecked my circle pad; the padding came off, and eventually the pad became very stiff and nigh unresponsive to my inputs (I can't run or perform Smash attacks). The pad itself was still whole for a while after that.

Sometimes, when I quickly press down, the game continues to input a "down" command. If this is due to Smash, I'm not entirely sure; however, the rest of the games I own are strategy turn-based, so I don't think it's one of their faults.

I can't speak for the other two, but I've had a 3DS XL for a long time, and the stick is still perfectly fine. I used it A LOT, and I played smash several hours almost every day since the game came out. I honestly believe if you break the pad it's entirely your fault. You don't have to be rough with it at all, even for the smashes.

Define "Rough," The worst I did to my circle pad was probably my attempts to dash-dance various times.

Slamming the pad swiftly in a direction in such a way that it makes a sound by banging against the 3DS. If there's only a little sound it's not that bad, but it's definitely possible to run/smash without hearing anything. And if it makes something similar to a GC controller-flicking sound, you're doing something wrong. I'm not saying you should always be on your toes, trying not to push the stick too far, but being a little cautious is all it takes for it to be fine.

Didn't break the circle pad, but did mess up the shoulder button for awhile.

Mines beginning to shown signs of breaking, the circle pad being slightly unresponsive at times, makes it hard to dash properly (mainly to the right, although lately it's affecting the left direction as well), I'm hoping this isn't an expensive fix.

My 3DS is 4 years old.

This happens to everyone after a couple of years I think. Mine is also starting to show small signs like yours. Not in a way that it affects my gameplay, or very very rarely, but I can feel it's not as fresh as it was when I got it. When I say it's your fault if you break it, I talk about when the thing on the pad comes off entirely.

Oh so I just have to buy a new pad, that's an easy fix, hopefully my local Wal-mart has em, and they're cheap.

Hum I'm not an expert on 3DS repairing, but I know it's possible to change it, and there's tutorials all over internet for that.

The cover of my Circle Pad came off, then I super glue'd it back together and it worked good as new.

I blame not only Smash 3DS for doing this to my poor launch day original 3DS (curse you speedy combo characters), but also Uprising and Mario Kart 7 (yes I was that precise on drifting) since I also played those games a whole bunch which made a lot of use out of the Pad.
