I think my join date says I joined around 2008 or something. I feel like the site's activity has declined drastically since then... there are enough helpful people around to answer questions, but I noticed the dearth of intelligent Smash discussion is happening on Reddit, surprisingly. I even noticed several top players post there from time to time.

What gives? What happened?

Also, while we're on the subject of me being an old fossil... whatever happened to Shinedashing? Back when I was in middle school we talked about how it was a surefire way for Fox to 0-death just about anyone. This was back in 06-07 or so. Maybe we were just clueless n00bs, lol.

I think it's called a Waveshine now.

Shinedashing is what waveshining used to be called a lot (according to an old school friend lol). Not sure what people thought of it back then, but it's common knowledge nowadays that you can SDI to get out of it.

Again, I wasn't here back when the Melee boards were more active, but I've heard PPMD mention how it used to be a hub for frequent discussion amongst top players, along with a few other sites. Iirc he still tries to maintain that atmosphere to some degree in the Falco FAQ thread, although I'm not sure where else you'll be able to receive help or read advice of that quality (at least from the big names anymore ): )

EDIT: I guess Tafokints' youtube series (Tafo Talks) is an interesting place to get info, if anything. He poses a lot of interesting discussion topics and gives his take on them. Not much comes from it (with youtube being his medium and all), but it's all I can really think of as like...easy access to player advice.

Everything has kind of already been discovered, crowd sourced, or discussed to death. There is still new meta and interesting things happening with different mid-low tier characters, but more of the old school players and current top players no longer need this place as much as they did back then (most are too busy now streaming, on social sites, or are adults and work too much)

The character forums are still going strong for some; especially a lot of activity in the Ganon, Falco, Fox, Falcon ones.

Falcon still gets waveshined to next tuesday, Mango uses dash shine a lot as a approach, and Pichu still hurts himself.

And I wouldn't say there is a lot of "intelligent" discussion happening on Reddit, most of it is old stuff dug up from here and re-wrapped or it's highlights from recent tourneys. The AMA's are very cool though.

So where you at now Shadow? Have you been able to fulfill your dream?

reddit has little to no intelligent discussion that is easily able to be found and recent. I see lots of stuff being discussed still and you can find info on virtually anything on smashboards to implement.

Most of the discussion isn't that good, and a lot of the people leading said discussion haven't even been to a tournament before. /r/smashbros and /r/ssbm aren't great sources for info, unless you are a beginner (which OP isn't, at all)

Oh man, you got me. I've been watching videos on and off for years, but this is finally the year I decided to just buckle down and practice. It seems a lot of the things that I needed have finally come into existence, like PPMD's guide on how to play alone, useful video compilations for advanced techniques, Tournament 20XX which will allow me to practice L-canceling, etc.

So where have I gotten? Nowhere really. Where am I going? We'll see.

How seriously can I take Melee while getting into med school (or once I'm in med school)? I might only get to practice an hour a day, but five years from now, hopefully I'll be able to spend two years of my life doing nothing but Melee. It kind of scares me though. I have no idea what the scene will be like 5 years from now. Maybe we'll be talking about defeating Plup and Westballz. Maybe Project M will have stopped patching and everyone will quit Melee to main Ridley. Maybe in 2020 Melee is dead and Smash 6 was its successful sequel.

What the future holds, I can't be certain. I might be one of many eccentric Ganondorf mains barely making it out of pools at EVO. I might be that guy in drag as Homura who mains Sheik. I might be some mediocre Fox player who really sucks at Rock-Paper-Scissors.

When the time comes though, you'll know my name.

I just don't know when that'll be.

Reddit is a terrible source, we're still very active. Reddit is where you can be if you want to stay a noob at, here is where you want to be to get better.

I think reddit is okay for buzz discussion, sharing new content and stuff. I don’t think it’s a great place for primary discussion and finding out / documenting new stuff, though. The voting system sometimes works well for filtering the ****posts out (which all too often clutter up threads here, admittedly), but it also encourages karma whoring with silly in-jokes that clutter up just as much, so I’m not too fond of that.

One thing I have to admit that I dislike about smashboards is that it’s hard to find good posts within threads. For example, PP’s and my threads have 38 and 395 pages by now. About 80% of these are people asking questions, more or less 5% are posts with valuable information. Because we don’t have a voting system, it’s very hard to find these posts. Reading through almost 400 pages is something that nobody does nowadays. So basically, the forum structure is making the knowledge pretty much inaccessible.

Yea it would be pretty amazing if you could sort posts in a thread by how many likes each post got. Or better yet if there was a "This Was Helpful" mechanic that people could tick off on individual posts if they found it worthwhile, then sort by that.

Reddit is better in this case for a Q/A or feedback, I think it is terrible to have a discussion or pretty much anything else.

Reddit is only better for Q/As because we never established anything like it, they have AMAs, we don't.

What I mean is it is easier to find questions specifically what you are looking for if it was asked and important ones, same with feedback.

That is really the only way I see it being better. Granted if the OP of a thread documented all the questions, it would be a lot easier.

I am so confused right now. Yes, in many ways Reddit is cancer, but I get the feeling we aren't talking about the same subreddits. r/smashbros can be a cluster****, but r/ssbm is amazing. It seems every post there is on par with something written here, except on Reddit I have no doubts that the information is still relevant to 2015.

Now, how good the info is, I really can't say, since I'm starting from a very basic skill level, but it's rare for me to read something and think "this guy is a fraud." It's all filled with people saying nerdy **** like "how do you approach Fox's neutral VS Marth on FoD because his SDI is getting him out of uair everytime" or something like that.

Perhaps, but honestly any meta that has significantly changed has been / still is being recorded here and discussed (usually in the character forums). Reddit does do a good job of bringing all this stuff back up again though, but most of it is old news and guide info from these very forums.

So if you're bored and looking for productive and entertaining Melee reads, just go back from the beginning in every Melee Forum and Sub Forum. It's awesome seeing how the pros, characters, and meta have changed over the years. It's all recorded here pretty much - the drama, the tier lists, the salt, and especially the community's history. This game has had a fascinating and long journey.

I also suggest the Melee/Smash podcasts like MIOM and The Salt Mines.

Interesting, thanks. I like going back into history -- I saw Leffen's posts here and it's fascinating to see how he treated people back then.
