A little obsessive? Really? Those comments made by both M2K and Armada were quite light, especially in comparison to the fulsome depth they could have gone into.
Obsessed with being in control of their characters, impatient during even a split second before they can move again, and always hungry for more tension?
Obsessed with being in control of their characters...I know that's a lot to ask of a fighting game. Furthermore, it sounds like this guy has barely seen any of Melee or PM, really. So yes, when you don't L-cancel, or have the ability to autocancel something, yes, that gives you an advantage and makes the player better. Smash 4 doesn't look dull by any means, but the way he's referring to tension here is a little callous. The majority of players like Melee and PM's slick, faster style in comparison to Brawl's more defensive-oriented gameplay. And it's more fun to watch a match where a slight mistake could take a stock, versus a game where you could cancel out of hitstun.
I mean, it's not to say many players of this series are obsessive, but it's because we have to be to get better. I think golf is boring as hell to watch, but there's more going on there than someone just hitting the ball and it landing nicely. There's the general feel of the club, which club you like to use, which
brand of club you like to use, what to do in certain terrain, the fact that different courses have different kinds of grass, and other qualities such as how much power you hit the ball with and being able to emulate hitting the ball a set distance reliably. So you could say golfers are obsessive too. It's a low blow for the author to brazenly call them control freaks, and as someone who actually has diagnosed OCD, it's a little offensive.
He comes off "holier-than-thou" when maybe he should come off as "silent."
