Overview
Demon's Souls is a role-playing game which is PS3 Exclusive and said to be a spiritual successor to the 'King's Field' series. With a dark fantasy theme, the player will set off into the heart of Boletaria, a kingdom of warriors that was destroyed after the appearance of beasts and demons.
This game is difficult to say the least, you will find yourselves dying tons of times and you're not going to be comforted when you do, when you die the repurcussions are harsh but this is what makes it exciting and rewarding as when you do finally defeat that mother****ing boss who killed you tons of times beforehand you feel amazing and get a rush making it all worth it in the end.
When you die, you lose all your demon's souls. However you can track back to where you died to get it back, unless you die again before you get to it, in which case there goes all your souls. There are also certain skills that enemies and other players can get that actually level you down.
This game isn't for everyone, you either love it or you hate it.
Story - Wikipedia
King Allanti the twelfth, in search for power and prosperity, channeled the power of souls. He brought unprecedented prosperity to his northern kingdom of Boletaria. That is, until a thick black fog covered the lands outskirts, cutting out the kingdom from the outside world. Those who entered the fog never returned.
But Vallarfax of the royal Twin Fangs broke free from the fog and told the world of Boletaria's plight. The aging King Allanti had awakened the Old One, the great beast below the Nexus, from its eternal slumber. And that a dark fog had swept in, unleashing soul-craving demons. The ones that lost their souls, also lost their minds. Chaos reigned, the mad attacking the sane. The Demons grow stronger and more powerful with each soul they devour. The legend was told from man to man, mightly warriors entered the cursed lands but none have returned.
Gameplay
So what is Demon's Souls like?
Well Demon's Souls is an open-ended action RPG in which you can customize your own character changing things like the gender, name, hair style, facial features among other things. This game may remind you of the Monster Hunter series in that you are fighting against huge beasts which can be humongous and many times your size, there are many different weapons and depending on which one you wield, you will play differently.
This game is more reliant on the player's skills though and not equipment as most bosses can take you out in one or two hits.
Character Classes - Wikipedia
You can choose between ten different classes of characters, each with different starting attributes:
Knight: Southern knights of Boletaria, strong and heavy armored.
Priest: Warriors of the priesthood, they have faith in God and use miracles.
Thief: Work under the cover of darkness, sneaking up behind enemies.
Magician: Masters of magic, poor physical offensive and defensive skills.
Temple Knight: Strong warriors that also use defensive miracles to their advantage.
Soldier: Skilled in combat, able to handle many types of weapons.
Wanderer: Low armored but fast and agile, skilled with swords.
Barbarian: Uncivilized people not wearing any armor, physically strong.
Royal: Aristocrats users of offensive magic, starts with valuable magic rings.
Hunter: Specialized in outdoor activities, skilled with bows, light on armor.
While these classes define your initial stats you are not restricted to them and can use any items you find on your adventures in Boletaria so don't worry too much about it. Your characters growth is dependent on the collection of 'Demon's Souls' which can also be spent on upgrading yourself.
Online Features
This part is a little hard to explain and slightly confusing so forgive me if you don't understand well.
This game doesn't have a separate 'mode' for online play, instead in the game you have two forms, Physical and Spirit. You change into your spirit form when you die and have to get your body back to change back into your physical form again thus you spend most of the game as a spirit in which you have only half your health bar unless you find a certain ring which leaves you with a bit more.
Now here's where it gets confusing, when in your Spirit form you can place down an item which offers your assistance to someone in their Physical form, if they choose to accept this then you can join their game and help them complete the level, Spirit form players will receive any Demon's Souls they may find but nothing else although if they complete the level they regain their Physical form as a reward also while you receive their help.
A nice trade off eh?
Now there's also one more form of multiplayer which is a little more malicious, when in Spirit form you can 'break' into another player's game as a 'Black Phantom' which brings over everything from your game, the Player will receive a message stating that a Black Phantom has entered their game but otherwise nothing will change. This leads to an epic game of Cat and Mouse as the Black Phantom stalks the Player waiting for the moment to strike, either going straight into combat or being a little more devious and using the dangers in the level the Player is in.
You can also get a stone that allows you to put down a marker to actually REQUEST an opponent. However, to get it you have to beat the game at least once with the bad ending.
The rewards and risks for this practice are high though as if you kill the Opponent successfully then you obtain all their Demon's Souls and regain your Physical form while if they kill you then the Opponent will gain all your Demon's Souls and you will also lose a stat level.
You decide whether it's worth the risk.
* Co-Operative up to three player can team up to play through levels.
* Messaging/Educational mode, players can leave hints and advice in the game to help or hinder other players.
* Competitive, a player can force into another gamers adventure and play as an opponent.
