Deciding on character choice for tourney.

Hey all. Lately, I've been playing a pretty mean Ganon, and before that I had been main-ing Olimar. My play with both is up to scratch, so what I'm more worried about is who will be able to get me further in a tourney. I don't play against many MKs or Falco's, hence me worrying about trying to go Ganon vs any at tourney level play. I figure a faster, more unpredictable character along the lines of Olimar would be more suited for it.

Beyond that, I'm also fuzzy on how to deal with a character pick that counters Ganon. IE, if I'm up against a MK, will my Olimar have a fighting chance? Should I stick with Ganon? I'm still clueless about what I should do if I'm playing my Ganon and I go up against a Lucas. Stay Ganon, go Oli? Any help with matchups or anything would be appreciated.

I'm having the same problem as you. Ganon is my current main but I'm worrying that my first tourney run will be a short one thanks to my choice. I finally decided that fast characters are the way to go. Before maining Ganon I was playing as MetaKnight and Snake (coincidence that they ended up being top tier, I'm not one of those people who chooses a character based on tiers, it just so happened that my two beloved characters ended up being so ****ing awesome) so at least I played them for a good while and still play them occasionally. So I suggest trying to supplement your Ganon with an Olimar like you want to do. Fast, hard to hit and unpredictable.

I'll give you a handy list.

You MUST switch when facing these characters:
- Ice Climbers
- Falco
- Meta Knight
- Wario

Switching is highly adviced against:
- Snake
- King Dedede
- R.O.B.
- Diddy Kong
- Lucario
- Wolf
- Ike
- Olimar
- Pikachu
- Toon Link

No need to switch if you think you're up to it: (they will still be tough battles, and there's no shame in switching)
- Bowser
- Donkey Kong
- Fox
- Peach
- Pit
- Zelda
- Samus
- Sheik
- Zero Suit Samus
- Sonic
- Link
- Lucas

No need to switch:
- Mario
- Luigi
- Ness
- Kirby
- Captain Falcon
- Jigglypuff
- Pokémon Trainer (except for Charizard)

Of course, you can give a bit of leeway to this if you want. I'm very confident in the R.O.B. match-up, so I'd pick Ganondorf against him. Do whatever you feel is necessary.

As for other mains/secondaries, I suggest picking a main among the Top/Upper regions and a secondary for counterpicks. Or just two characters you like that are coincidentally good.

Characters I'd recommend as main:
- Snake
- Meta Knight
- Game & Watch
- King Dedede
- Falco
- R.O.B.
- Marth

And secondaries:
- Pikachu
- Wolf
- Toon Link
- Olimar
- Donkey Kong
- Wario
- Diddy Kong

Know that you'll have to learn those characters to the best of your ability. It's not easy mode where you just throw out moves and they ****.

Thx for the list FD, pretty good info to keep in mind for myself as well.

Only person you listed that I also play though is Wario ;;

I think in terms of who I do best with "overall" (not including Ganondorf) tends to follow this list for me:

Ness/Wario/Mario/Lucas

Although my Wario is pretty alright I am not sure if he is quite tourny ready. Your list may have me practice him a bit more if my other characters aren't that viable tourny-wise. Wish I could say I have a main but lack of tournies in Georgia that isn't Melee makes me just have a variety to choose from.

Nevertheless, good to see some of those characters that I can use Ganondorf against. Olimar and Diddy Kong will be a complete pain though. Could never figure a good way around grab spam on Olimar and still practicing against my friend's pro Diddy Kong.

I've grown quite fond and adpt at using the more heavier characters. I just picked up DK and Dedede but they are quickly becoming two of my favorites, I'm going to keep them in mind for the next tourney I go to. I'm still proud at maining Ganon because he's just always a pleasure to beat people with. Ike is another guy I switch in too. I use my Bowser as a tester agaisnt people, I use him first to see which of my heavyweights I should use next. It may seem a little weird but that's how I play lol. I've tried other heavyweights (Snake, R.O.B., Yoshi, Wario, Samus) but I just don't like them as much- I'm more of an in-your-face player than a projectile user.

Personally, I'd advise you to use Olimar.

However, Ganondorf would be a nice choice because the more Ganons there are, the higher his chances of placing better.

I'm using Ganon at a tourney on Saturday, so this information is quite helpful. Thanks very much. I guess I'll just counter pick R.O.B., Falco, Marth, or Mario based on who I'm playing.
