Dead Controller?

I have a question about if my controller is actually starting to die. I'm basically new to competitive, and while at a Smash 4 tournament, someone told me that if I wanted to get better at controller input speed, I should pick up Melee because of how fast it is. It has quickly become evident how much harder Melee is. Now, I see videos of Melee all the time, and I don't expect myself to do combos like I'm watching, but it seems that anytime I try and grab, it doesn't work... And I don't know if it is my controller, or if grabs in Melee are laggier after things. I hit z on the ground and it only will actually go for a grab 50% of the time. My GC controller is a Nintendo one, but it has been used since I got the console in 2001... I don't really want to get a new controller if I don't have to, and it would be great to know if it is just something I am doing wrong that I can fix within my own game

Ok, if you are pressing the grab button, you are able to grab, and it's not coming out, it's a controller problem

I get the feeling you are trying to grab after landing from a jump or during end lag of a move. The problem is that you are pressing it too soon. When you jump then land you have land lag, if you try and grab during the landing lag you will light shield instead of grabbing. Timing is important.

Same goes for any ground attack or aerial attack you land from too early. During the end lag of any move you can't grab.
