So I made this post on the Brawl boards at Gamefaqs, and after figuring out how much a stage can change up gameplay I decided to try to see what people think about making custom stages for competitive play. Here are some of my ideas from the post:

I mean, I've built some neat things before. Like an opening in a wall with a conveniently placed spike meant for Fox/Falco to illusion through. Looks cool, and surprises a lot of people. I also position ramps on certain sides of the stage, meaning everybody is forced to recover above the stage, or risk falling to the moving platform below. The ramp is also great for people who can spike, because you don't actually have to go off the edge to space your aerials. I've used the diagonal platforms to create a caved in feeling and allow slopes, but people can actually go through the bottom so there is less bouncing and more Ko'ing. I've put wheels in the middle of the stage, so anybody who can get the opponent at the right time can kill off the top. I've made stages with ceilings and decorations that actually bring back techrolling/chasing. I've made ramps that drop items/bombs into a hole, thats really fun to spike people into.. I've had openings that are perfect for short-hopping through and comboing people against walls while they're forced there by the moving floors, and then finished off by spiking them into well-placed little holes in the ground. Looks sweet.

Overall I've just had a lot of fun with this "shallow" stage builder, and I was expecting people to use it for some awesome stuff. Everyone kept telling me how boring and depthless the stagebuilder was, but being able to place terrain like this for perfect setups is just too much fun.
I was thinking it may help with some of the irksome new additions in Brawl. Like sweetspotting, and the lack of techchasing. Maybe even make it easier to combo! Won't revolutionize Brawl's metagame, but my ideas are just a start. Most of the stages I see are fun, cool-looking, and symmetrical, but they don't really change up gameplay too much besides making it harder to KO.

So anybody willing to consider these ideas, or even expand them would be greatly appreciated. Even if I'm not onto anything, I'd like to hear feedback. I'll probably be sharing my actual stages here on Smashboards when I get more time.
