Go to 5:40.

This confirms Custom move sets will have only 4 special moves for Neutral Special, Up Special, Side special and down special. One is the normal special move and 3 variations of the special moves depending on your playstyle, match up or stage.

This means Custom move sets might be viable for tournaments depending on how quickly you can set the custom move sets.

After the updated info, do you want custom move sets in tournaments or not or you want custom move sets as their own tournament? I honestly think Custom move sets should be part of the average tournament and not be excluded.

I definitely want custom moves to be in tournaments. The question is will they be tournament viable?

I think as long as, if you plan on using a custom moveset, you make sure your opponent knows what moveset you're using before the match. As it stands right now, the alternate moves seem balanced enough as to not be gamebreakingly OP. Of course we'll have to play the game before we know for sure, but I just can't see Sakurai and his team making an oversight like that.

I think you misunderstand. The three choices per special only applies to Miis and is a unique system for them. General custom moves are probably more flexible, but we haven't seen the details of how it works.

While it is true that the Miis will have 3 choices per special, I wouldn't be surprised if the regular cast could also have 3 choices per special. That Palutena video strongly suggests she'll have 3 choices per special.

The biggest impact of this on balance is not so much that it could allow unfair moves but that it could allow us to ban unfair moves. Imagine being able to ban Whirlwind without banning Metaknight, just give him a new neutral special. Whether we allow individuals to switch up their movesets or not, this gives us new options for balancing so long as we handle it intelligently.

Trying to argue which moves will be legal is a logistical nightmare. We can't even mildly agree on stages, moves will be even worse.

I would say that either we use a default set or we allow all of them, banning moves as they are proven broken (and not just superior). If a move is banned in a default moveset, we pick the next in the list and play with that till we have a verdict.

No, it would not be perfect initially but, if handled well, it could be a real asset.

I hate to be a downer on the community, but it wont be handled well. No one will be able to agree or really prove a move is 100% broken to ban a specific move. Some people think MK while strong is just fine, you'll never convince them to get rid of Tornado or something similar. There will be no way to really show it's broken.

I do not necessarily participate in tournaments, but as a spectator and potential participant, I would surely enjoy playing the character that I want to main. Placing restrictions on what moves I can and cannot use seems counter-intuitive. However, Sakurai is reinforcing the notion that the customization is not competitive as it is. So I would be surprised if they were deemed legal.

Oh wow, my speculation was actually correct. I find it a little bit weird that besides the Mii characters, only Palutena gets a diverse set of customizable special moves.

Couldn't it just be like other games with different moves for characters and the tier list is based on the best possible combination of custom moves?
