Custom Character Sounds

I know how to make my own sounds and put them into the game, but sometimes, they're too quiet, and the volume can be different on certain characters.

EXAMPLE:

I made Captain Falcon's "COM AWN!" taunt say "F*** YOU!" instead. I also put that same exact sound on Ike's side smash. The volume on Falcon's taunt is low, while Ike's side smash is high, or atleast higher.

How could I fix that issue?

Plus, I heard that a custom sound cannot be too long in duration compared to the default sound/voice. How much longer can I make the sound/voice without the game breaking or not taking the sound/voice?

I believe the culprit for the sounds being too quiet is that the clip you inserted has a different bit rate than the "vanilla" Brawl/PM sounds.

What would that mean and is there a way to change that?

If you open the brsar file with brawlbox, you will see a volume field you can change when clicking the sound you want to play. And the sounds in brawl have very different values. Not all depends on how high/low in volume your sound is.

This is not true. I already added a 20 seconds long sound in a case with 0.1 second long sound (empty, in other words) and nothing happened. And I did this like a hundred times already.

This also made my sounds have static noises and a terrible quality, occasionally.

Wow, this is honestly mind blowing. I did not know any of these until now. It is time to experiment, then! Thanks man, I will get on this right now. For the sound duration, I just wanted to be better safe than sorry, and wouldn't have tried adding like 30 second sounds. I'll keep this thread open just incase I run into more issues.

EDIT-
I opened the BRSAR file, which I downloaded off the internet, and I found the character list through snd>group>chara. How ever, I don't see any sound files or volume mechanics. Are you able to walk me through this?

No problem.
Ah, that folder name is deceiving. Go to snd->vc, if you want to edit voices, or snd->se, for sound effects.
One thing worth mentioning, don't forget there's a maximum sound space you can have per character, around 1mb. If your soundpack pass that limit, which includes all sound groups used by the character, you will have problems. Super Sawndz will mark in red if you pass the limit if I'm not mistaken, I don't really use it.

That's what I was trying to talk about, like there is some sort of limit that you should not surpass. Okay, I'll go on BBox as soon as I get on the computer. Do you know what is the average mb size a character's soundpack has?

This is very useful information! I too like to make sound packs and I would just usually level and amplify the volume in Audacity to an acceptible level.

Forget averages in this case. You must know how much space you have or you may have a hard time choosing which sounds you will have to reduce quality to fit in game later. You said you knew how to put your sounds in game. So make a sawnd file of the character you're working with and see how big it is. It's much safer this way. Or use Super Sawndz to check it out. I don't know if this is true, like I said before, I don't use Super Sawndz, but I think the limit it will show you would be 0xFFFFF.
I'd recommend to not use stereo sounds. Brawl already lowers the volume in one side depending on your position related to the camera. It's pretty pointless.

Yea, that's a boring way of adjusting it. If the volume is too low, you end up losing quality by raising the volume too much. Just don't forget that if you replace that wave file directly, the volume info won't change, and maybe you get too loud sounds.

Since this seems like an appropriate thread to ask this, does anybody know the max file size for each character's .sawnd file?

Edit: I just noticed that the OP asked this so nevermind...

Is the answer yes or no?

Alright, pretty cool. Now I also know not to use stereo audio, but instead use mono. I guess I can see that, so the audio doesn't try to go to both speakers in the TV, and the audio focuses it's volume on one. I'll see what's up with the process after I finish working on my novel. Thanks alot for everything, sir.

I have another question. When you open the brsar in BrawlBox, that volume field is always at the max. In the top right under a RSAR Sound, most of the Volume values are 70. Should I be changing that to a higher value to increase the volume, or are there problems with that?

Edit: Also can I just replace the sound clips directly in Brawl Box instead of Super Sawndz? That way I'd only need to use Super Sawndz to make the .sawnd file.

You can increase the volume up to 255. For some reason, the loudest sounds in brawl don't go over 127. I can't say if after that value it will make any difference, but you can make it louder than that because if you call the sound effect functions twice at the same time, the sounds are played with a much louder volume. I know you're making soundpacks and you can't recur to psa commands. But given that, I believe you can increase up to 255. It works in Mario Kart, at least.

Yes, you can replace the sounds there. That's the way I do and I think it's much better because brawlbox gives you a lot more info about that sound. The only problem is that it won't warn you if you pass the size limit, but as long as you know what you're doing, it's a very small problem.

Fantastic! Thanks for the transparency, I just didnt want to screw anything up before I tried to make any more progress.

I understand. I didn't experience any major problem while doing this, but if somethings happens, I'll keep an eye on this thread for a while longer.

So I fixed one of my sound packs by re-recording a few clips fresh and increasing the volume. I still am leveling clips to an acceptable quality, but no nearly as bad as before.

Btw, I still inserted these few clips in Super Sawndz because they sounded a little different when I did it in Brawl Box. Is that normal?

"A little different" doesn't tell me much. I said I don't use Super Sawndz, I can't answer that.
I used sawndz and brawlbox, and what I noticed was that sometimes Sawndz created static noises after inserting, and brawlbox sometimes crashes when you play the sound before inserting it.
But I didn't have problems while playing the game (assuming the two problems above don't occur). You can insert them with Super Sawndz and adjust the volume with brawlbox, if you think it sounds better that way.

Yeah sorry for being vague. Basically the best way to describe it is a difference in quality. I just thought I would mention it incase it sounded familiar.

Hey man, sorry I was not logged on for the longest time, I auto-logged out of my account at one point, and tried remembering the account information, but I forgot and gave up. I finally gave it a shot again, and I got my account working. Very sorry for the long wait. Now, last night, I made my custom Dante sound pack for Captain Falcon, and I tried what you said in Brawl Box to up the volume in snd>vc>captain in the .brsar file I have. I saved it, made another separate copy, went back to Super Sawndz and made another copy of his .sfx pack, then replaced the one I put in Project M, but I did not notice much of a difference when tested in-game. I even turned off the music during testing, and it's still kinda quiet. I saved the .brsar with the modified volume changes(which all sounds I replaced were amplified to 100), and since then, when I would go to BBox and edit the .brsar volume for Captain, it would give me an error message everytime I click on a sound file. It's more of a separate window, saying that "BBox has returned some error and you have the choice to send an error report or continue as is..." I also noticed that the audio player for Captain's sounds was also gone and replaced with a bunch of text. All I did was change the volume to 100 on all the sound files I replaced/modified. Did I perhaps maybe trigger something I wasn't supposed to?

Sorry it's a lot to read, I just wanted to be detailed and clear as I could be.

I assume you have tried the method suggested above. Do you remember your outcome out of the process? The results? Were they successful or a failure?

Thats happened to me with the Balloon on Smashville, but never with a character. Most of the tips suggested to me in this thread were successful, so I'm not exactly sure what you did that was the cause of your problem.

Hm, interesting. Really, I have no idea either. So you have done this with characters, correct? Hopefully you won't mind, but please would you like to tell me the exact steps you did the process in? If you can remember, of course.

What exactly are you trying to achieve? It will make it easier to explain.
I replaced Captain Falcon's sound pack that I put together my self using Super Sawndz. The sounds came out quiet and not too audible. I want to make the sounds louder and more audible like Captain Falcon's default sounds.
