Crew Battle Description

I have a small little group of friends that all play Brawl. We've been having small tournaments recently, just the 12 of us or so. I want to get a Crew Battle going. They seem interested, but they're sort of confused. I understand it, because me being me, I watched the entire USA vs the World Apex 2013 Crew Battle. However, they don't want to watch a 2 hour video.

Basically what I'm asking is, Can anybody write up an easy-to-understand explanation of how a Crew Battle works? I seem to be having a lot of difficulty conveying the concept in words.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
The basic idea is having teams of X amount of people. The teams will send a person to fight, and the winner of the game stays and faces the next person with the amount of stock that they had when they won. Depending on the house rules, you may have the option of switching your character in between battles (though I have never seen this).

EX.
Team 1 fighter 1 (3 stocks) beats team 2 fighter 1 (3 stocks) : 2 stocks left.
Team 1 fighter 1 (2 stocks) loses to team 2 fighter 2 (3 stocks) : 1 stock left
Team 1 fighter 2 (3 stocks) fights team 2 fighter 2 (1 stock) : 3 stocks left
