Created Stages as counter-picks.

Supposing that the create-a-stage feature is more robust and very well done in the next installment, I think it would be a cool idea if you could use some of your created stages in tournament as counter-picks. Of course they would have to be checked out by an official there to make sure it's playable (and assuming you can easily assess whether or not it would be legal enough without much thought; who knows if you'll be able to put in stage hazards or whatnot).

Can't really imagine many people being for this idea, however, so I'm interested in seeing what you guys think about this.

The idea of using some custom stages was actually heavily explored in Brawl. It creates problems as others can't practice can't practice on certain stages, newcomers wont be expecting them and will feel it's unfair, and the idea of using a stage YOU made of a counterpick is entirely unfair.

I figured that this would be the general attitude towards this, but I think that if it were only limited to a few tourneys (smaller venues, not your APEX's or EVO's) and both players have access to it, then I can't really see the harm in it, as long as it seems like a viable stage.

Actually, this isn't a bad idea. Advance Wars does exactly that in their competitive community. They have custom stages posted online with their creation formula, and players create the stages on their game file. They practice on the custom stage and play on it in tournaments. The reason for this is because a majority of the default maps were considered unbalanced for competitive play. I am all in favor of such universally accepted custom stages in Smash. It might become an issue with some players, having to go online and making these stages just to play at a tournament, though.

A way this could be countered is for TOs to amek a set of custom stages and send out how those stages are made so people can make them to and be able to practice on them and only have those custom stages allowed.

That's what actually happened (I must have worded it poorly) and it still created tons of problems. If you want more info, I think it was Overswarm that tried it out.

I actually didn't know that about Advance Wars, but that's pretty cool to hear. I personally don't even think that you'd have to have everyone practice on them. Just show up with your stages and if they are playable then you can use them for counter-picks. I feel that if PS2 can be used as a counter-pick in some tourneys, then a custom stage with just normal non-moving platforms couldn't be super unbalanced. The surprise and unpredictability, if within the rules, could be pretty fun.

Well the reason why I would say to practice on them is that it usually takes time to determine whether or not a stage is competitively balanced, although in some cases it could be easy to tell. I agree, a stage with non-moving platforms would probably make up the majority of these custom stages, or with one or two special objects.
This idea would also keep the game fresh for a longer period. Just imagine how long Melee would last with a stage creator. Or at least an option to turn off obstacles, though Sakurai already said he wasn't going to have such a feature for Smash 4.

Sounds like a good idea at the start but the glaring problem here is that if YOU are making the stage of course you will make it to benefit your character and the fact that you'll be used to it compared to others would give some people great advantages.
