Crazy Unlock Theory

If this is in the wrong place, my apologies.

So I had a thought just now. Smash Bros seems to be heavily emphasizing its economy this time around. You receive coins for achieving stuff and currently there is little to spend the money on. The 3DS (and Wii U I imagine) at least has the trophy shop, but what else is there beyond that?

So, what if this time you can use coins earned ingame to purchase unlockables, like characters and stages as an alternative unlocking method?

Weird idea for sure, but I'm curious what the community thinks of it.

Using coins to purchase unlockables seems like something to appease those that have no time to unlock things during their playtime. If anything, it might be just one way to unlock characters/stages/alt costumes, but I definitely do not think that they will remove the classic ways of unlocking characters. It's a staple, and Smash Tradition.

I want that challenger approaching screen ;c (and here we go off-topic a bit) JUST NOT THE SIREN FROM MELEE, those gave my 7 year old self nightmares, and still haunt me to this day.

If this were to be the case, I feel that the most likely scenario would be that once you collect a certain amount of coins (not necessarily at one time) you unlock a character. Kinda like a replacement for the "do X number of Brawls" unlock criteria.

Though there could be a "character shop" of sorts. If that were to happen, I hope that each character would cost the same amount and all be purchasable from the start. Whilst in previous games you could unlock the characters (with some exceptions like Mr. GnW in Melee) in any order it still felt like there was a specific order that you were meant to unlock them in.

But anyway, my feelings towards that can only be determined by how many coins character would require to be obtained and how easy it is to get said coins.

I guess I could see there being a "random character unlock" in the shop. Hopefully it'd be expensive enough to not render unlocking some characters traditionally pointless... although I wouldn't use it either way. :p

I'd prefer characters not be locked, but if they must be, then I hope the Challenge menu reappears in this game and you can get playable characters from it. (Last time, you couldn't.)

Imagine you unlock something like a Lip's Stick trophy, but then you see in the square to the left of it, something that looks like the silhouette of your favorite character. "Is that Ridley, playable?" you shriek. And then you drop 1,000 coins to crack it open prematurely. And then you find out it's just a trophy.

If this happens I imagine it'd be quite expensive and only something you can do one or twice while you're trying to unlock the entire roster. It'd also probably unlock a random character I imagine as to not give too much away in the shop.

I would rather just unlock characters the way we always have. Classic or some form of single player mode and vs matches.

I can see that maybe if things are too hard to unlock normally maybe you can buy them at a high price if you prefer it (maybe they end up having a mark that you unlocked them that way or something like that?) but characters will be unlockables as always by playing. Maybe stages.

I'm fine with this. I enjoyed that system in Advance Wars, as well.

That said, I'd rather that be one of many ways to unlock things. There's just something satisfying about playing VS until Captain Falcon challenges me.

I believe coins should be for alternative skins, trophies, and perhaps stages and music, but not characters.

I like unlocking characters by playing the game. Gives me a chance to try them out as I go rather than being overloaded.

I'd be fine with a character shop if they still make you fight the character to unlock them.

having trouble unlocking Pac-Man? drop a couple hundred coins, & then... CHALLENGER APPROACHING
