Counters don't seem to fair to me. It's like I do everything right I'm in for the kill and I get countered

Well, is there any specific counters you are having trouble with?

If it's just a playstyle thing, predicting the foe/calling their bluffs are more of an instinct thing than an issue to be learned.

Maybe try using grabs more, as that bypasses most counters.

Never saw Counters as being unfair as more of a tactical thing. If you use it to defend against an attack, that's good. If you rely on it, then the person can easily bait you to counter and then punish accordingly.

Try to bait them into countering and then either punish or grab them.

It's rock-paper-scissors.

Attack = Rock
Shield/Counter/Spacing = Paper
Grab = Scissors

As tempting as Rock is, making it always be one of the first things you'll think of, you're going to wind up wrapped if you keep choosing Rock. That's how the game works, unfortunately; the boring-as-hell Paper beats the Rock that makes things actually enjoyable. So you have to compromise with Scissors, which isn't quite as appealing as Rock but is at least better than ****ing Paper...

Counters aren't really broken in 1v1's, just annoying. In Free-For-Alls, on the other hand...

Defensive play is bad because it counters my go-to playstyle!! If you don't play the game like I do, then you're stupid!

While I don't appreciate you putting words in my mouth, you can't deny that the might of spacing is the primary thing that our game is criticized for.

You just have to read their actions. If you attack and they use the Counter, they got you. If they done the second time, they got you again. If they do it the third time, you are being outplayed. During the animation, just grab them! As boring as it get, you have to wait them to make the Counter, and during the lag, grab or attack them.

One of my friends spams counters. Easiest way to beat is bait it. Grab and pull back on attacks until after the counter frames.

I think it's all about timing on how you perform a counter. You have a few frames to register being hit. For Marth, it leads him out in the open, so he's very, very susceptible to being punished if you just, boringly enough, wait and then attack. Or be very risky and charge up a Smash and release it after his counter finishes. It's very risky.

I think Counter's are one of the more easier things to bait for those who rely it a lot.
