Counterpick campers vs "heavy" characters

Occasionally I meet good Dedede/Ganondorf/Bowser players in For Glory. I usually like to play Shulk against them, since he has viable tools and is quite a heavy character himself. But there are a few people who still beat my shulk. I especially suffer against good Dededes.

So I wonder if I should switch to Mario or even Lucario and abuse their projectiles to the maximum (I am not one of those roll spammers, though). I think that I probably would fare better if I would do that, but on the other hand I would feel a bit like a meanie because I abuse such an obvious weakness of the opponents' character. Especially, since it is just Glory Mode and there is always the typical button lag online.

How do you see that? Is it for you a question of manner not to counterpick spammers against such characters or is it just a viable way to use and abuse everything what is needed to win?

I don't think there's anything wrong with abusing a weakness of your opponent's character. If they're a good player, they'll know their weaknesses and how to work around them as much as possible, so it's not like you'll get an auto-win. If they still absolutely cannot beat you in that matchup, they are free to switch to another character.

Learning multiple character to cover weaknesses that you'd like to fill in isn't a bad thing. It is a competition, so you should be doing what you can to win. Just remember this, when you 'abuse' a tactic you are doing it even when it's detrimental to do so. If you go into a fight with a heavy with a spam character believing that your projectiles will make the match, you will fail. Any heavy character that has skill will have been practicing against spammers, because it's a tactic that is all over For Glory. You'll be playing a match that takes forever, won't be fun and will most likely lose more matches than you win.

What you'll want to do is find a character with a good ranged game that fits your play-style and then learn how to adapt them into what you currently know. Don't abuse their ranged, but learn how to make it an extension of your mind game. Obviously it will take time, but long term you'll have more fun with it then just switching to a ranged character and hoping for the best.

TL;DR, Learning a secondary to cover weaknesses in your main is fine. Just be aware that in the end it is the abuser that gets the comeuppance, so you'll want to work more than spam into your menu or be prepared for the better heavies to walk all over you.

I think you could pick one of them up as a secondary and cp for the next match if needed... projectile spam is a viable strategy... just be ready for their aproach

Just own them and have fun. Counterpicking is part of the game and there is nothing wrong with a bit of strategery.

Honestly though, when I'm playing Ganondorf against a campy player, I just wanna kill someone.

As above said, sometimes I like to pick 'Dorf just to prove I can do it.

Feels good. :3

I don't think you should feel too guilty if you exploit the weakness of a character to win. Characters like Ganondorf and King Dedede don't have much of a response to projectile spam; Ganondorf is very big and slow while King Dedede is neutered from projectiles because he can't efficiently use his Gordo Toss.

Just because you can do that doesn't always mean you should always resort to doing that. A good Ganondorf and King Dedede player will find ways around their projectile weaknesses and exploit your weaknesses. So, instead of "spam to win," you should switch up strategies with your characters so that you can become less predictable and punish players for their wrong moves. If you spam, then your opponents will just find a way to catch you off-guard and finish you.

Counterpick characters are fairly common. For example, Luigi gives Fox a pretty hard time as Luigi has the upper hand in the match-up; after beating a Fox several times, he counterpicks to Little Mac, a character that can absolutely reck Luigi in For Glory.

In a competitive game, use any strategies that you can to win. But don't use the same strategies over and over again. Projectile camping and zoning is a viable strategy (no matter how frustrating it is for the opponent), but sticking to such things will have the opponent work around it. If you must, counterpick to a character that gives their main a hard time.

As a Toon Link main, I've definitely found heavy characters having more trouble with me than others, though I'm not really ever campy. I'll of course back off when they're smacking me around, but I'll always come back rushing in. The only difference is while rushing at them, I'm throwing bombs and boomerangs everywhere like an Australian Bomberman!

Nothing wrong with picking obvious counter-picks in these situations, but I personally like finding ways to overcome these kinds of obstacles with my dedicated main character. :)

As others have said, I don't think there's really an issue with counterpicking a character based on the other person's character. I usually don't because I like to stick with the character I picked regardless of the matchup, but if the other person decides to pick someone that counters my character, I don't mind it.

In a way you're helping them deal with an unfavorable matchup, even if they themselves don't know it. That's the way I see it.
