It is true, that more often than not, you have just told a cool story, bro. I may or may not have paid any attention to the tale that you have undoubtedly spent a lot of time on, but it is, nevertheless, a cool story.
You may have poured hours upon hours of work into that forty paragraph rant on the effects of the prominence of the Jordanhill railway station in the west end of Glascow, days of your life into that speech on the cultural effects of El Horminguero, but my response will always be this: cool story, bro.
Why those sweet, simple three words? Despite that I probably wasn’t paying attention to most of what you said; I’m willing to bet it’s a cool story. I could actually pay attention next time, and give it in-depth feedback - perhaps even telling you how to say it better! But, I find myself unable to do this, unfortunately. Why? Because I already know something. I already know that what you said was a cool story.
Sure, you’ll probably catch on quick enough, and realize that I’m not really paying attention to what you’re saying. Constantly telling you that I liked your allegory, but never telling you why I liked it. You’ll soon see that I don’t really care about what you’re saying, but I instead put faith into you, and trusted that your story, was in fact, a cool story.
Some may call it blindly trusting you to push out a constant stream of excellent epics, of fantastic fiction. I read one of your works at one point – I thought it was pretty good! But no, for this new narration, I’ll just tell you that what you’ve done here is most definitely a cool story.
Call me a fool if that suits your fancy. It isn’t like most people will realize this – humans are easily satisfied with even shallow compliments, and won’t press for anything beyond a generic ‘good job!’ I doubt you had even put much thought into how easy it is to pretend like you were paying attention to something you just don’t care about. You too, have given out your fair share of cool story, bro-s.
Admit it – every once in a while, a friend, maybe a family member, will be telling you some ridiculous trite that you find yourself unable to care about. You’ll smile and nod, and at the end, give your own personalized ‘cool story, bro’.
Cool story, me.
