Converting small portraits to BRRES and numbering guide?

I've finally decided to start swapping out character portraits as well as everything else. The big portraits are easy to swap, just BrawlBox it. However, when it comes to the small portraits, apparently I have to place them in info -> portrite and have each portrait converted into a BRRES-file.

So what is the currently best and easiest to use program and guide for that? And is there a numbering guide to help one see which BRRES-file corresponds to which potrait?
