Smash Wii U Controlling more characters at once with only one controller?

Today I played a Sm4sh tournament. During warm-up something strange happened: One player, using a GC controller, suddenly controlled two characters at once. On character selection creen he controlled both cursors of P3 and P4, then, ingame, he controlled Zelda and Rosalina at once. How can this happen? How to reproduce this glitch?

Are the GameCube controllers WaveBird by any chance?

No, there weren't any wavebirds. There were some wiimotes and pro controllers (which caused some problems because these controllers logged them in to a game themselfes after they were synched with one console), but the palyer who controlled two players at the same time used a normal GC controller.
