I don't really have too many options in using a controller to start out, so I was thinking about using a PS4 controller until I learn the fundamentals before settling on some gamecube controller (I'm currently a smash 4 main atm anyway) Do you think this is a proper controller to start off with? Or should I straight away buy a gamecube controller? It's something I've been thinking about.

Straight away to a game cube controller because if you ever enter a tournament you will lose and you really won't be able to master the game at a true level

GCN CONTROLLER IS YOUR BEST BET

Can't use one?
Get an Xbox controller at least, they're in the shape of the GCN better. Use dolphin, and set up KeyJoy or whatever it is. Bam, done. You got yourself a shoddy training pad until you can get an "elusive gamecube controller."

If I sound like a jerk in this post, I don't mean it. Just had some helpful advice to give.

Why would you ever not get a gc controller? Using anything else seems like deliberately setting yourself up for failure

Don't you already have a gamecube controller with an adapter because of smash 4?
I use the game pad since I never really owned a GameCube to begin with (I had a 64 tho). And I only wanted to try something before settling on a gc controller anyway. To see if I really enjoy the game.

Ye, honestly its much much better to straight up get the gc controller. It'll feel weird af when you switch off the ps4 controller later. Plus the smash 4 versions are actually pretty cheap on amazon

Yeah, like others said just get the GC controller ASAP honestly. And if you need an adapter I recommend buying the official one, there's a noticeable difference for me.

Got 2 sm4sh controllers in yesterday. One will not shield drop to the left with the axe method whatsoever (won't even spot dodge) but they both back dash well and the other controller shield drops pretty free. Happy with them for sure, despite the one imperfection.
