Controller shorting out Wii

This started maybe two weeks ago and I chocked it up to just weirdness. But this morning I got some pretty conclusive evidence that my white GC controller is defective in such a way that it shorts out my Wii, causing it to completely shut down to avoid damage. I am forced to unplug / replug the power supply in order to start the Wii back up. At one point I was not able to even start the Wii with the controller plugged in. I was, however, able to play normally with another, older, GC controller.

Has this ever happened to anyone, and do you know of possible fixes?

My white controller has only had about 2 years of light to moderate use...the control stick doesn't even have any slack yet.

I've had this happen before to an old (came with the GC off the shelf) black GC controller but unfortunately there seemed to be no fix to the problem. I had to go and buy another controller. I'm sure somebody with some electronics experience might be able to identify the short and fix it but otherwise it sounds like your controller is dead.
