Controller question

Hey guys, I'm new here and somewhat new to smash 4. I've been recently working on getting better in Smash 4 and working on my movements, but I'm kinda at a stand still. The controller I use is an old gamecube controller that I've had for years and also used for years with other games as well. However, when I try to do things like Perfect pivots or small movements I don't feel like it comes out consistently, but I don't know if it's me or my controller. I've opened up the controller and cleaned a few times which seems to help a bit, but it eventually goes back to being inconsistent with time. I also have a fairly new Wii u pro controller where my movements are fine whether it's Perfect pivots or extended dash dancing etc... The problem is that I'm not very comfortable with the Wii u pro controller.

So the question being; is the problem me or do i need to buy a new GC controller? Or Is there a way of checking if the left analog stick is off-centered somehow?
If not I was considering buying the white brand new gamecube smash 4 controller.

Aha! I think I have just the solution for you! The most underrated controller ever! The Wii Classic Controller Pro. Which also happens to be my controller of choice, so I might be a little biased against other controllers.

Anyway, so you say your problem is that the Wii u pro controller isn't comfortable because you're used to a Gamecube controller. Well, the classic controller pro is kind of like a hybrid between the two. It is kind of shaped like an snes controller, except with handles on the bottom similar to a gamecube controller. It has 4 face buttons, a D-pad, two analog sticks with the ridges that a gamecube controller has, (the sticks are identical to the sticks on Wii nunchucks), a +, a -, and 4 shoulder buttons. It's a very similar layout to the Wii U pro controller. One of the main differences is that the ZL and ZR buttons aren't actually triggers like on the Wii U pro controller. They are completely flat, which is helpful in games like Smash Bros because you have less input lag. In fact the original Wii classic controller had no handles and ZL and ZR were on the top next to L and R, similar to the New 3DS. It was meant to sort of be a new and improved SNES controller.http://data:image/jpeg;base64,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 (I know that one is WAY to big but I couldn't find a better one.) The only thing that some people consider a con is the fact that you plug it into a Wii Remote in the same spot that a nunchuck would go. I don't really care and you're used to Gamecube controllers that you have to plug directly into the console anyway so I doubt you would care either.

TL;DR: Buy this. You'll like it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wii-Classic...682068?hash=item2f0691cf94:g:AVQAAOSwCkZZWVFz

EDIT: Also, one thing I might add. If you have big hands, you might not like this controller, as it is about the size of an SNES controller, but if you're used to Gamecube controllers, you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks for the response, but i'm not sure if the classic controller would be for me. The analog sticks being that close to each other would probably not be comfortable for me, maybe because of my hand size.

Honestly, that's what I thought before I bought mine. Growing up using only Nintendo consoles and Xbox, where there are either <2 sticks or they're offset, the idea that two sticks would be on the bottom and that close together seemed insane. But then I picked up one of these and it felt fine. If you know anyone that has one or if you can try one at a game store i definitely recommend it. Otherwise, you could get those new Gamecube-style controllers. What do they call those, "fight pads" or something? idk, this thing.

Well buying a new controller is almost a last resort option and I wanted to see if there is a way of checking if my controller has an issue or if it's just me (if possible).

EDIT: Yeah, i'll for sure try it if I know someone with the controllers

Oh OK. Well You said your Gamecube controller you've been using you've "had for years" so it's probably just worn down by now. Friction is a very pesky thing when it comes to controllers. I'm sure you could infer this yourself, but every time you press a button on your controller, the plastic inside rubs against each other just a tiny bit. But when you keep doing that over and over and over again, eventually it's just gonna be worn out. This has happened to me before with other controllers. So you can look up how to try to fix your controller. But, I think, don't just go with my opinion only, you should do some research, but I think that you'll just have to buy a new controller. That's just me though.

You could just get a new GameCube controller. You could also check to see how your sticks are registering by using 20XX to check them.

I wouldn't suggest using a non-gamecube controller. It honestly doesn't take a long time to get used to them but Gamecube controller is still the best. You can check it either with the wiiu-usb drivers on PC or 20XX (or both). A lot of people who are newer or less experienced will often complain about the controllers so it could just be a matter of getting used to it but since you say the pro controller doesn't give you those issues it is quite possible the controller is just worn out. As a friendly fyi new controllers are often a little stiff and you sort of have to play a decent amount to "break them in." It's kinda hard to find that perfect balance in a GC controller where it's not too stiff (stiff controller makes it harder to use the analog stick in partial directions, this is very noteworthy if you are trying to up tilt and play with tap jump on but will also make it harder for you to do things like walk without running) and not too worn out where the joystick is super loose or constantly drifting in a direction.

Yeah, might as well buy a new controller. Now I have to find a place that sells a new white GC smash 4 controller lol in Canada.

Check out that above link, you can also check out from the 20XX menu (20XX Menu, go to VS Mode > Tournament Melee), from here I can't remember the name of the option but you are able to see how the sticks are lining up.
Oh yeah, i think i found it, thanks! You press down at the character select screen. Anyway here's my numbers ^^ Are these normal?

Edit: I might need to update this after a few hours of using my controller, where I feel it becomes "inconsistent" to find out for sure.
