So, The 64 players at my monthlies I go to are planning on starting up again. What are my options for a good Nintendo 64 controller that wont wear out fast?

I believe the common consensus is to get an official N64 controller that still has a tight stick and then grease the moving parts with ceramic grease. That's what I did with this one.

That's a Funtastic series Ice Blue controller that I purchased used and then took apart to refurbish. I used an electronics cleaner spray that I got at Radio Shack for all the contacts and ceramic grease (blue tube in foreground) for the ball at the base of the stick and all the parts it comes in contact with.

If you plan to purchase your official N64 controller on Ebay I suggest contacting the seller and asking them if the stick is tight. Tell them that you'll give them negative feedback if they mislead you.

Oh, that grey controller in the picture; it has the newer third-party "GameCube-like" thumbstick but unfortunately those don't work well with Super Smash Bros.(N64) so I don't recommend them.

I bought a GC style stick too, and yeah, it plays like ****.

Supposedly some guy made a chip for it that fixes a lot of the problems though. Wish I knew about it more than that.

I've been told that there is a new and improved third-party thumbstick available now that's better than the batch I got but I haven't tested it out myself yet to give it the Grizzmeister seal of approval. ;)

Overall, however, I still believe that the official Nintendo 64 controllers are the best but finding ones with tight sticks is getting harder everyday. If you find one in pristine condition you'll usually end up paying through the nose for it.
