Controller Issues

So very recently my controller has been having a problem with reading smash turns to the right. Whenever I have just L-cancelled an aerial, am walking to the left, or sometimes just standing, and I try to input dash to the right my character simply pivots to the right instead going into dash animation. This happens in both Melee and PM, so it's definitely not a game issue, and when I tried on my friends controller I could easily dash right from all of those positions. Is this a problem I can fix by just replacing the control stick or will I have to get a whole new controller?

If it really is an issue with the controller and not how you're doing the inputs or something, it'd probably just be best to replace the whole controller. Most issues that come with the analog stick are just from them being old and worn, which means you'd have to replace the stick box on the circuit board. It's a lot more trouble than it's worth, tbh. Plus a new controller feel so nice and clean and stuff. If you can, totally replace it.

Well what's strange is I've only had the controller for about a year. Do they really wear out that fast?

Is it a smash 4 controller? I've used a couple of those and the analogue stick died (read: got unpleasant to use) very quickly for me. I do some pretty rough inputs with moonwalking and stuff, but my other controllers have all lasted longer than my smash 4 controllers. I'm talking like 2-3 months and the stick didn't feel good any more. Randomly couldn't shield drop (probably the main / only real issue - note that I shield drop how Axe does by holding sideways and then shifting down to the notch) and some inputs felt sloppy / I had to start adjusting how I do them.

Switch the stickboxes from control stick and C-stick. (I’m assuming you’ve read my MIOM post about smash turns and back dashes; I’ve since confirmed the suspicion I voiced there.)

It's a white controller that I bought before they came out with the Smash 4 logo controllers, but I assume the Smash 4 ones are the same barring the fancy logo.

Yeah! Thanks again for the great article, I'm just a little nervous when it comes to taking my stuff apart. But what's curious is that you said the backward dash problem doesn't exist in PM, but I still experience the same issue. It's gotten to the point where I can't even SideB to the right sometimes.

Might be a potentiometer misalignment, then. Or the dreaded faulty mainboard. Reading the values with Magus iso or Dolphin input display would make it easier to find the source of the problem.

Thanks again for the response. I just got a Magus iso, but what should I be looking for to identify the problem?

Control stick values that are off from their defaults at certain stick positions. Compare with a properly working controller if you can't figure it out on your own.

I tested the default position of the current one I"m using (official white controller), and it settles at (0.0125, 0.0125). My other controllers settle at the same value, but when I attempt to moonwalk using the white controller it seems the green X coordinate will only ever hit 1.6, when i smash turn to the right (1.0000, 0.0000). My other controllers usually hit 1.7 or 1.8. What should I make of that?

Green is character movement force. You need to look at the purple values, that change when you move the stick, even when the game is paused.

Ah my bad. Yeah my white controller's default position settles at either (0.0125, 0.000) or (0.0125, 0.0125). When I attempt to moonwalk by walking left then smashing to the right, sometimes it properly dashes hitting (0.98) or greater, and sometimes it simply pivots and settles at either (0.0125) or (0.025). I also notice after executing a grab or L-cancelled aerial, sometimes my control stick's position settles at (0.025) rather than (0.0125), and I am unable to dash to the right. All of my other controllers do not do this.

0.025 is negligible, still far within the dead zone. Unless you are saying that you get this value when holding straight right?

Anyway, I can’t diagnose this from afar. You need to make your own observations, think of possible explanations for your problem and test them.

Will do. Thanks for all the help. I'll probably end up switching the switchbox like you said before
