I bought a new white controller with the extended cord and I'm trying to switch out the triggers with older ones. The triggers have a gaurd on them and the screws won't come out. They take a smaller phillips and I've been doing that. Any ideas???

You need to use a tri-wing screw driver on GC controllers or you will destroy your screws.

That's for the shell only. The screws on the trigger covers are Phillips-head.

For some reason (possibly age), old-model controllers (pre-white) have very stiff screws on the trigger covers; at least in my experience. Of the 4 controllers of that type I've tried to remove the trigger covers from, all of them have had one screw which I've been unable to unscrew at all, though the rest have been possible to unscrew. My white controller has had no problems. I'm not sure what to suggest as a solution.

Unscrewing for the first time can be tough, but they will come out. Just use a small phillips screwdriver and after they come out, install the metal bars from an old controller. They just pop right in then you screw it all back up.

Off the top of my head I can't think of the size but I found that a Phillips screwdriver one size larger than the kit you can buy online that comes with two Tri-wings and one Phillips for Nintendo Accessories works the best. Use the largest Phillips screwdriver that fits because you want to get as much as grip as possible on the screw.

Yeah, I also use a larger + tip screwdriver than the one that usually comes with the red-transparent triwing. If you still can’t unscrew it, you can pull out the rubber plates and apply a very little bit of silicon oil to the inside of the outer tube with a Q-tip. Just push it in where the rubber plate was, the goal is to decrease friction between the outer tube and the inner tube. That usually fixes the problems of the newer controllers (in my experience at least).

So wait, hold the phone.

You're telling me that I can put my old controller's perfect, WONDERFUL triggers into my brand new, otherwise great SM4SH controller and I won't have trigger problems anymore? Just as long as I take out these fabled "metal bars" and install them on my new one???

Yep, the new controllers are stiff because the metal bars aren't included. You can grab some from an old controller and they just pop right in.

Wow that's gamechanging. I was considering switching triggers because it bothered me so much!

Just to make sure before I take apart my brand new controller and risk a faulty re assembly, ruining it and causing me to cry endlessly, I just want to make sure of this. Where are the metal bars located, and where do I pop them in to the plastic receiver? What kind of screwdrivers will I need other than the triwing? What should I be careful not to do, if anything?

Just a small Phillips screwdriver for the trigger. It's dead easy to do, the metal bar is on the trigger once you open it and there's a notch where it goes in. It goes in the exact same spot on the new controller. Just make sure you open your controller upside down or all the buttons will fall out which is a pain.

Right ok sounds like a breeze. I've taken controllers apart before, I just don't like surprises. Especially not surprises that cost me $20 - $30. Thanks for your help!
