Controller help for Project64k

I've been using a keyboard forever on Project64k and now I want to use an Xbox 360 controller on this laptop I am using now, but simply hooking it up doesn't work since the windows installer says that the laptop doesn't have the software. Does anyone know where to acquire this software? Also can anyone give me a mini-tutorial on how to properly setup a controller so I can play it online, I've never done this before.
