Controller choice

Lately my interest for the 64 part of the community has grown to a level where I'm considering going back to that game a little. I see that the most common emulator to use is Project 64, but what controllers do people around here prefer? Seeing as I find it literally impossible to play well with the keyboard. I really hope this isn't a stupid question.

Thanks. Didn't expect such a quick reply! I don't think I will be using the PS2 controller, but might try out the XBox 360 controller before settling on N64.

Word of warning though: the 360 Controller takes some getting used too, you will find yourself jamming the stick in an attempt to make it respond; definitely not as fluid and graceful as either the GameCube nor N64 controllers

Nice to know. I will not invest in a 360 controller in order to try it out though. One of my friends have one and I might try that out. However I do find the concept of using a GameCube controller for the first game pretty attractive, seeing as how I'm lately more used to playing Melee and Brawl with one. Can you recommend a GameCube to USB adapter?

I think the GC controller would be god awful for Smash 64.
just the l and r triggers alone desrtoy it (if you do not pull the springs out)
not to talk about the b button being really far from x and y and other defects for 64.

I agree, pulling L or R ALL the way in to L cancel sucks. Plus, the distance from x/y to b sucks for stuff like shine canceling, shdl, or any use of quickly jumping and attacking. Sticks nice, but the layout sucks.

EDIT: omg i started posting this, walked away to tend to my pasta, then came back, finished posting it, and noticed i got ultra ninja'd.

I don't understand what the problem is with the GC controllers when Melee players do HARDER **** on them and don't complain.

Enlighten me please.

just because people do not complain, does not make them good, see the problems mentioned above.

Well, I guess learning the GC controller is hard, but since I'm so good with it 64 on the GC controller is the easiest **** ever. The N64 and GC (and wii actually) all have pretty terrible controllers. I hate N64 controllers.

There are pro's and cons of each controller

N64: if you live in an area that actually plays offline, this is the best idea, otherwise it is the best choice Gamecube: MASSIVE A** DI, probably the easiest to shine cancel with if you are a fox main and good to use to practice for melee. If I personally was going to get a controller for online I would use a GC controller as I play melee/barlw

Xbox360: Its an xbox controller so its massive with 3000 buttons. Thought this allows you to customize it easily.

PS2 controller: It wasn't designed for games

PS2 controller is my favorite controller by far for games that don't require quick thinking/reactions.

I'm pretty sure the 360 controller is quite popular for SSB. I think Kabal and SheerMadness use it, and they're both very precise players.

X box controller is pretty good. But the real deal- N64 controller with an adapter, is the best. I just bought an adapter for my N64 controller and it doesn't work at all. I am sending it back... kind pissed...

Hey DMoogle. Congratulations on your modship. :)

I use the logitech PS2 design controllers that you find in most major electronics stores for all my emulator stuff.
I personally can't stand the N64 controller. First time I picked one up, coming from the SNES, I was like, what the hell is this stupid contraption that Nintendo crapped out of their ***?
In fact, even playing SSB on the VC with a GC controller is easier than using the N64 controller.
That's mainly cuz they GC controller actually has a decent control stick.

Pressing the triggers is kind of a pain, but if you've played melee then it's expected. The layout isn't as terrible as you may initially think. The C stick works just like the C buttons would on the 64 controller, and act as a jump button. So you can slide your finger from C-up to down-b and it works. Also, it takes some practice but you can shdl using the C-stick as well.

I used to use both 64, and logitech playstation style controllers, they just don't hold up to how fast and hard I play. 64's joystick always wears out and I dont feel like going through pain in the ****in *** joystick replacements. And psx's pad becomes unresponsive after a while and the joystick positioning blows horribly. And on some psx style controllers the buttons are wonky and dont have the correct kind of sensitivity. I've never tried 360 controllers myself, I wanna give it a try someday.

Keyboard has been good for me for a long time, and doesn't give as many advantages as much as ppl cry about. Fine spacing is hard on keys like you could easily manage on controllers, you cant tilt without setting up a previous move and holding first, same thing with walking. And the DI thing? I've seen more people with hacked joystick deadzones DI much farther than I ever have. Also people on keys are controlled easily on stage and off because of spacing advantages to ppl on controllers (and no its not just me, try me if you want :p)

Advantages to keys is that you got instant running pretty much. ledge di is easier imo, I've ledge di'ed DK's wind punch up to 300% (though I went off the top of the screen lol) and keyboards dont wear out even a quarter as fast as 64 controllers do unless you like...rage punch your keyboard fighting utilt spamming kirbys or something O.o...

The thing with keyboard is you have to find a control setup that works for you, because the default layout blows fat yknowhats. I personally use ASDW for movement, B on left arrow, A on down arrow, C-down on right arrow , Z on up arrow, R on right ctrl and taunts on 0ins. If you have a laptop, get a usb keyboard, because laptop keys suck.

In melee you don't have to pull the trigger all the way in to l cancel.

I bet short hop would be a pain on c stick LOL

Wow, alot of comments. Didn't expect the GameCube controller to be too bad, but I won't be using the Playstation one either. I have tried the keyboard, but I find it to be very hard to use. Guess that leaves me with Xbox or 64. I would prefer 64 if I could find a version where the analog doesn't get broken.

I thought Melee players DID complain about them? I definitely hated the triggers back when I played Melee.

you gotta be 2pro

to get around the triggers use the Z button

to do shines use the 2 fingure method

and play with GC and you get epic di

you can assign any button to the c stick and you can also assign a c button to the x/y

I'd really reccomend trying the logitech controller, costs 20$ and I've been using it for years. The buttons and joystick are pretty good. It's not easy playing with the worn out joystick (I have an N64 With Smash and all 4 of my controllers are worn out). I bet Isai has a stash of hundreds of new n64 controllers in his garage

I'm assuming that the MadCatz N64 Controller Pro doesn't work with adapters? I have one, and its stick doesn't wear down. Its control stick has today's design(no rubber padded sensors on the sides).
