So, I'm a bit to new to Smash fandom, but I've learned a lot over the year or so that I've been pretty into it. But there will be things I don't know, so don't come at me too hard. And yeah, this is my first post, but I've been thinking about this hard enough for me to really want to post about it.
Has there been consideration since the Evo-based ranking system died out to ever try that again?
Absolutely no disrespect to the panel-based annual rankings, but one of the more enjoyable things I've had with sports and games is seeing data upload in real time. If you don't get what I'm talking about entirely, I propose something akin to this: http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2016-mlb-predictions/ (actually more along the lines of their NBA and NFL Elo features, but those seasons are obviously currently inactive).
I imagine there are barriers. I see that the system died out because data was no longer so easily collected. I imagine that deciding whether or not margin of defeat in a set is a predictive factor would take a lot of parsing. I imagine that constructing a system that plundered the sheer necessary amount of data would be considerable. Because it might be of importance to collect data continuously and many previous years of data would be hard to plunder, it might be necessary to start fresh and either start everyone at 1500 (long run average) or make some guesses and then let incoming data correct early, incorrect numbers from there. People might want to give weight to wins with certain stakes (ie, EVO is more important than many other things and perhaps such wins should be treated differently). That might be hard to implement.
But this is a broad community that's obsessed with Melee, so how interested anyone would be in a table that updated after every tournament and definitely if we have the people who would be able to do it.
It's something I've been constantly interested in since I've been a fan but don't even close to have the time or the tools to embark on something like that.
So yeah, I'm just gauging interest, wondering how possible people think it is, maybe even hoping to inspire someone to pick up such a project. But maybe I'm ignorant to a lot going on and this is something that gets discussed often. If so, sorry, and I'd love to be directed to conversations around this topic about the level of interest and challenges that would come with it.
Obviously if this was successful, you could make it even neater and chart player success on certain stages, in certain matchups, and so on. I just think it would be such a wonderful tool, and I hope I'm not out of my mind here.
Anyway, thanks, and also hi, SmashBoards. I'm YoungsterJoey. Apologies if this isn't in the appropriate forum.
