Conquest Mode allowing customization in random WiFi?

The daily picture caption claims the next campaign will be having people fight each other with "fighters they've trained up and fighters made of metal".

I'd presume that means it's going to compare the win results of custom characters vs. metal characters.

Is the new campaign actually active for anyone to clarify this? Being able to use custom moves/gear at least some of the time would be nice.

Fighters they've trained up likely means Amiibos. Not sure about the metal ones though, are the normal fighters metal figurines?

No, the new conquest is Wii Fit Trainer and Little Mac (trained) vs. Mega Man and Samus (steel). WFT/Little Mac are currently creaming Mega Man/Samus.

I'm looking forward to trying out conquest mode. Looks like a lot of fun. Inspires me to learn how to use all the characters.
