Event - E3 Invitational 2014 Connectivity between versions. How do you think it will work?

I've seen a lot of talk about game modes and NFC functionality being in the game, but I haven't seen much about how both versions of Smash will connect with each other. Now, we already now that Global Smash Power is linked to a Nintendo Network ID, so assuming you're using the same one for both consoles, then that data will be shared. However that isn't much. I personally think that you might be able to transfer any unlocked characters from 3ds to Wii U versions once the both versions are out. I also think we might get some sort of connectivity using the NFC figurines. Those are all the ideas I've got. How do you guys think it'll work?

I question the legitimacy of anything related to NFC until E3 reveals if it's used, but I digress. Global Smash Power likely is shared. If custom stages return, it wouldn't surprise me if that is another feature shared between the two versions. Character unlocks might be a possibility. I personally believe custom movesets will be transferable as well.

Well, he talked about customizing on the 3DS version and importing it, so I'd assume you make custom move-sets on the 3DS version and import them to the U version.

I am really hoping that if you unlock characters on the 3DS version you will be able to transfer that to the WiiU version so you don't have to unlock everyone twice. I guess the NNID would be involved so you can't just go around unlocking everyone for your friends.

There are likely trophies that can only be obtained from transfer of both versions. You might be able to send over picture that you take on either version between the two. Custom stages, stats, and moves should be transferable.

But I think the real thing that is going to get us is that some content cannot be accessed until the WiiU version comes out. Meaning we can look at this locked slot for a long time, building up hype, building up anticipations, and then when the WiiU version comes out we can then finally access that last bit of extra content.

A common complaint I see about 3DS being released first is that we will have known the roster for months by the time the Wii U version comes out.

We know the rosters will be the same, but I think some secret characters and stages might only be unlocked on the two games from having the two versions connect. Not only would it be a surprise if it's announced shortly before the Wii U version is released, it would also provide incentive to buy both versions.

Hackers will find out who any remaining secret characters are.

That would be a huge disservice for the people who will buy the 3DS version. Why should we not be able to enjoy the full game right from the start? It is not our fault that Nintendo decided to release the two versions in different dates. I don't want a incentive to buy both versions, I don't care about the Wii U version, my interest lies solely in the 3DS game. And I want all of the characters on it. God, the Wii U people are so inconsiderate towards the 3DS userbase. Either way, this wouldn't work, because the 3DS cartridges can be hacked and in a few days after the release, even if some characters are locked for some reason, the hackers will discover who those characters are and post them on the internet.

Haha, yikes. I'm just speculating here, the idea of unlocking one or two extra characters or stages if you purchase both. Previous Smash games had unused data hidden on their discs too (although unfinished, but who's to say you can't download finished data from Wii U to 3DS should the 3DS data be unfinished?) so I didn't think hacking would have been too big of a deal. I'm not saying it's a great alternative to something like original DLC that everyone could download but I'm just throwing a possibility out there that I haven't seen many people consider.

My thoughts had nothing to do with the Wii U vs 3DS debate, being inconsiderate was not my intention. I'm looking forward to the 3DS version just as everyone else with a 3DS is.

I bet there are some characters and stages (and possibly trophies too) that can only be obtained if you have both versions. Or at least it helps if you have both to unlock those thing earlier.

This is nonsense. I will pay $40 for the game, I want all the content developed for it. I will not buy a freaking Wii U just to have all the characters in my 3DS game. If they pull this kind of move, Nintendo will deserve all the **** people are giving them.

I agree with @ Reila Reila . With-holding characters from either version is UNTHINKABLE. Not only does the director acknowledge they are the most important part of the game, but he won't back down on his word to not with-hold any characters from one product. With his feelings on DLC, I don't think he would dare use characters that exist on the game but can only be unlocked by having both versions as a loophole to make people buy both. Nintendo knows both versions will sell well, and people will still buy them even if there were no connectivity.

I severely doubt any actual playable content with be exclusive. I anticipate Global Smash Power, stickers (if they return) and at most trophies will be transferable, among other largely inconsequential content.

I didn't say what I'd like, I said what I think they're going to do. Also, I didn't say they'll put just exclusive characters, because I know they won't, I meant maybe they announce a free DLC over December to put a couple of new characters for 3DS version. And maybe you can unlock earlier some characters on Wii U version if you have the 3DS one. Otherwise, it has no sense this double-version stuff.

I really doubt Sakurai would do that. That would be highly inconsiderate. Unfair to the 3DS users who are only getting the 3DS game, and also unfair for those who are only getting the Wii U version.
