Smash 3DS Connection Trouble

Hey guys,
Have any of you ever experienced that moment when you've downloaded the patch for Super Smash Bros. 4 and been able to connect with some friends, but not others? Well, I have and it seems as if this problem is unique to me. I don't ever lag when I'm playing with my friends from the UK (I'm from the U.S.), but when I try and connect to some other friends, an error message appears. Does anyone know how I can fix this? It's really begining to bug me >.<
