during the first screen shots with how to play, they showed us the damage bars and character icons. but in all of the new screen shots, they don't appear. is this because they can be toggled on and off, or is it coincidental that all of the new screen shots are taken at such an angle that they exclude them, even though they sort of got in the way of the fighting a few times in the first screen shots.
what is your opinion?

the pictures in the "how to play" entry are actually gameplay screenshots. the new ones in all the other entries (character bios, item screens) are just renders of the characters and their attributes. thats why they arent there.

I dont think they are screens of gameplay
Just look at the second ss of the gooiey bomb , mario is watching wario while running. I dont think that sakurai made chars to stare at each other.
however it would be cool :p

It's what the developers do when they change the camera angle...they take them out to give you a better view in the shot :psycho:

How to Play looks like actual game play footage. That's why you'd still have the them in.

its called a debug mode people. the developers have the power to turn on/off the displays at will. theyre MAKING the game. they can show what they want to show, and leave out what they want, and it could have absolutely no connection to the game we're all going to be playing.

remember the 'special video' from melee? if you notice, whenever people did air dodges during that vid, they didnt flash black, like they normally do during gameplay. why? was that vid entirely not gameplay? of course not. but they choose to leave that out, to make it look better overall.

"Renders"?! As in, computer-rendered artwork? You guys are ****ing insane. You think they have artists sit down and create intricately detailed pieces of art, pieces that happen to look EXACTLY like the gameplay engine already shown? What the hell, guys. They're shots taken with the in-game graphics engine, whether or not it's actually "gameplay" or not. I still think it COULD be gampeplay, even the shots that seem to be front-views instead of side-views. Don't you guys remember Melee? You could pause the game at any time and zip the camera around. All of the pre-release Melee shots don't look like gameplay angles either.

Seriously, though... you guys think they're RENDERS? :dizzy:

While petre makes an excellent point, I feel like you guys are forgetting that it was possible, in the release version of Melee, to play an entire match without any displays. Remember that? If you can't, you don't even deserve to be reminded.

I can't believe someone actually unlocked camera mode! How did you do that? Surely no one has access to it. That's not really trivia.

Why would there be an option of taking them off? How would we play without knowing how much damage us or our opponent has? They just didn't put them in there for the screenshots.

They are all in game shots.
The damage counters can be toggled off in a debug menu. I believe it was X+up on D pad.
I've done it with Melee, while if anyone has access to the debug menu for brawl, it'd be the developers wouldn't it?
