So since I have been getting more and more into the competitive side of smash I have decided that if I can't get my hands on an old school tv I would invest in buying some component cables, since while I do have a small HDTV at home it does have a component mode and component jacks. Now I don't know all the details but to my understanding while it won't get rid of all the lag (which I have begun to notice when I occasionally go to my local tournament), it does reduce. What I'd like to know for those of you who have HDTV's like me or happen to be saavy on this topic, exactly how much of a difference would investing in component cables make when it comes to lag?

When it comes to lag it doesn't make much of a difference IMO. It does however make the game look much more visually appealing and has much better quality. Worth the 7 bucks I paid.

Component cables means that your TV won't have to deinterlace the video so that should notably reduce delay, though of course there still we be some. It'll also look much better. CRTs are not difficult to find though so you should just go that route.

Better yet, find a CRT that takes component. It's soooo nice.

I've actually been trying to find a thrift shop in my area lol, but I have had no luck. My one fear is the expense, a friend of mine doubts it will be that expensive though, so its just a matter of finding a thrift shop

There basically IS no expense when it comes to CRTs. People legit throw them away. They will be happy if you took them.

Component cables literally cost £3 (about $5) and will significantly reduce lag (so long as you have your Wii configured to output in progressive scan; if it is still outputting in interlaced scan then there will be no reduction in lag at all); they are entirely worth getting. However, there will still be significant lag. The only alternatives to a CRT for a practically lagless setup are combinations of very specific monitors and expensive component to HDMI converters (and even these setups lag by approximately half a frame).

On my LCD TV, the use of component cables reduces the lag by approximately half.

Check your TV for a game mode. My Samsung TV has one, and it practically eliminates all input lag. Otherwise, I'd suggest finding a CRT somewhere.

quick question to anyone, does "movie mode" do the same thing as "game mode" and reduce input delay as well?
