I'm basically brand new to the melee scene and I was wondering what methods you guys use to make L-Cancelling a habit

Generally what i would do is to just to keep practicing it and then it will soon become second nature to your gameplay.

Well, if you really want to make L-cancelling a part of your muscle memory, then you have to make it an extension of your body first.

You will need a gamecube controller along with a roll of tape, as long is it can hold you finger to a trigger. You will need to apply the adhesive in a way that has your finger on the trigger without pressing it. Now, you could be practicing it in smash, and this method will definitely keep your finger on the trigger, but this has an added benefit of being able to be used in everyday life as well.

Think of it like this. Every time you jump or land from some kind of air time, you hit the trigger and L-cancel. After awhile you should see some results. Or sore fingers.

Good Luck!

I'd say practice SHFFL'ing first, and get used to the timing of fastfall into L-cancel, then try without fastfalling, and while hitting an opponent (timing is delayed... hitting 2 shielding ice climbers is very delayed). Then practice doing moves immediately after you L-cancel, like jab, dtilt, ftilt, wavedash, etc. Doing that will make it easy to see whether you got the cancel or not, and is good basic practice anyway.

I sat on my couch and L-cancelled all of my moves until I could get 50 in a row on each (250 total). If I missed even 1, I would completely restart.
