I know there have been tourneys already for competitors with Japanese copies of the game but I'm wondering if there will still be a competitive 3DS scene when the game get's to the Wii. I'm getting serious about smash and I'm very attached to my 3DS after a life time of handheld gaming.

Anyone think the game will continue to be played competitively on the handheld?

Well, I think so, given that there are more 3DS units sold than Wii U, although with the Wii U release, it will certainly ramp up Wii U sales.

More than likely since there are way, way more 3DS units sold worldwide than there are Wii U units, so there will be a great amount of people only able to own the 3DS version of the game. I don't see why it would suddenly fall flat on its face

I shall make it my mission to make sure it does not die. Mainly because I'm cheap...I will probably mooch off friends for the wiiu version regardless, but the 3ds version will likely be the only one I will play on my own time :/

I hope so.

I can't believe I am actually saying this but I don't really mind if its played competitively or not. It's such a great game I hope it will make people want to carry around their 3DS now and would want to play games for fun with strangers.

There are currently around 37 million more 3DS units compared to Wii U units. Plus the 3DS version is coming out first. Yeh, I don't think there's any reason to worry.

It'll be strong, especially considering just how many more people have a 3DS than a WiiU. For stuff like tournaments at very well known competitions and stuff, probably the WiiU one so there won't be risk of connection problems and people can play more comfortably. 3DS competitive smash will certainly exist and be common, though.

Undoubtedly. An entire community wouldn't come to a halt just because the same game is released on a different platform. It would probably separate the two into different communities and events would be held accordingly.

I see it being both existing simultaneously. Perhaps tournaments specifically for each game, or both held at the same time.

Plus I think the idea of a portable Smash would keep people playing it.

I think some of the real hardcore players will move on to the wiiU and some of the major events will be on the wiiU. But not everyone is going to spend money on a console just for one game. the 3ds will have competitive play but the wii u will see most of the love for real competitive players.

I certainly will be playing the 3ds version more, so....hit me up.

But seriously, I doubt the 3ds version will die out just because wiiu exists. I honestly feel the 3ds community will be more open to customs than the wiiu version community will be, so there's that....idk I'm interested to see how the two evolve together.

I will play the 3ds version for the next 4-5 years, and I play every match to win so therefore the answer is yes, I will always be here to make sure you have some high level competition.

I don't think anyone has to worry about the 3DS version losing it's competitiveness once the Wii U version is released. Like people have said -- the 3DS has sold 37 million more units than the Wii U.

I'll make the transition to the Wii U though, and seldom play the 3DS.

Wii U to 3DS tournaments ration is gonna be like Melee to Brawl. The former will be dominate due to most players preferring aspects of it (Gamecube controllers, everything has wired inputs, looks better on stream, etc.) while the latter will just hang around, due to a handful of players preferring that version.

I really want there to be a competitive scene for 3DS for a long time because from what I've played of the demo, I'm really comfortable with the controls and I've never gotten into competitive gaming at all before and I feel like smash for 3ds would be the best place for me to start soon. I also dont have a Wii U so if all the excitement immediately shifts to the Wii U version right when it comes out, then my dreams of competitive smash are no more. So I'm glad a lot of people on here who know more about this stuff than I do say the 3DS version will survive. Thank goodness.
