Common Bad Habits Among Players

Hey Everyone,

I was on anthers the other day, and a opponent actually mentioned that i had a very bad habit of uptilting after dash attack. This got me thinking, there must be a ton of bad habits players use on the regular and since I don't play with my local scene too often i was wondering if we could get a list on here noting a ton of bad habits players use regularly. This way i could eliminate my bad habits from my game play and i could more easily pick up on other players bad habits. Thanks

having too much mains you should only have 2 max
I know i have a ton of characters on my mains list but i only use the first couple of each game super seriously. the other characters are characters i like to play but rarely do they see tournament play

At about 11:15 in this interview, PP gves a tip on a bad habit most Marths have (Get it? Tip? Marth? Hahaha... Ha....) The interview is from 2013 so a lot of pro Marths have at least partially broken this habit, but it is still super prevalent.

Shield grabbing works at all levels. Shield SDI and shield ASDI make shield grabs viable on decently spaced approaches. Trying to shield grab a perfectly spaced approach (especially without shield DI) IS a big mistake, but I have seen tutorials and guides that deem shield grabbing as a whole an unwise maneuver but it's simply not true.

I agree, shield grabbing is good, but in my experience low level players grab every single time you hit their shields. It was a problem I had and it's one I recognize in others.

I've noticed that a lot of people roll directly into me if I hit them with a fox/falco side-b when recovering. It's a bit weird landing and then standing there for a second waiting for them but you can punish with like, anything.

Common bad habits not listed that I see all the time.
  • Always recovering low/predictably
  • Sitting in shield trying to bait an approach
  • tech rolling on platforms
  • Challenging spacie shield pressure
  • jumping when your opponent approaches, still invincible from halo
  • Always teching/rolling away from the edge
  • Trying to roll behind another player
  • Burning your second jump too early in your recovery

Tending to move around pointlessly is a terrible, TERRIBLE habit that a lot of people have.

Make sure to move with purpose. If you move around a lot with no real direction for no reason, you'll find yourself in a bad position a ton of the time. If it feels like you're getting hit by a ton of "random" hitboxes that you feel you shouldn't have been hit by, then you may need to think about smart movement a little more.

Not paying attention to the other character. I used to have this problem, I was focusing too much on my own character to see what the other person was doing and pick at their habits.

for newer players i've seen quite a few people always wait for their opponent to approach

Friend of mine constantly stood under a platform as marth to try and bait one of the two: Shield grab from bad approach, Fsmash from awful spacing/bad approach. Relied on cheese/gimps 99/100 times.

Did it as falco as well.

This teaches you nothing and will eventually leave you behind the game while people learn how to actually play the game at a competent level.

There was a time where we were pretty close in skill, now it's not even close. What's funny is seeing people fall for the same stuff every time.
