Combos to button masher...?

I honestly can't explain it, it's very peculiar. When I'm playing with friends, or against CPU's, I can combo people, shield properly, etc. However, as soon as I go on FG, it's like my skill level instantly drops. I go from properly executed combos to simply button mashing, and not landing attacks. Now you could say it's the lag, which to be fair is probably part of it, but I don't know if that really can take all the blame. Now, I played smash 64 casually when I was really young, with items on, so you really can't count that, I never played melee because I never owned a gamecube, and could only play when I went over my friend's house. As for brawl, I found it really boring so I quit playing it early on. Therefore, you could say smash 4 is basically my "first" smash that I'm actually trying to get good at. That being said, I've quickly went from scrub to at LEAST low middle level skill. It's just really discouraging to do very well, and then get destroyed on FG. Is it nerves? Is it lag? or both..?

Note: I am using a pro controller, so that could also contribute to input errors.

I think that FG should in no way be used to measure the skill of a player. Never let FG get to you, because the online aspect makes in extremely unreliable.

Play Luigi and do nothing. You'll at least beat some Little Macs.

But srrsly, computers play diffently than players. they're immune to predictability for example. So, for example, with Kirby, you can't continue'lly approach with, for example, down air, you'd have to use a mix of forward, neutral air, back air, and down air.
