Combos and Getting Combo'd

Hey started picking up Marth and have practiced hours and hours comboing and training against CPUs (with mixed DI). I finally start practicing with Marth in normal matches, and it seems like I can usually get little pokes in with fair or d tilt and other hits, but I can never string together actual combos on characters. I hold my own and don't get combo'd too bad, but when I play slightly better players, it seems like they just can get 0 to deaths on my without any problem. So I have a few questions:
1. What are ways that I can actually get combos on people? I try to string U airs and tilts, but either I can never follow up or I can get nothing out of it.
2. What are ways to get out of combos and become less predictable? I think I can DI fine, but I may just need to work on that.

OTHER QUESTIONS:
3. Is it better to be an aggressive or defense Marth? It seems like it's easier to just be patient and wait for them to move because when I go straight in with aerials, they just seem predictable.
4. What role should Marth play in teams? I usually just stay back and help pick of enemies when they come close and just help edge guard.

Thank you!

1.) two basic things you need to know. The first being what your character can do and what combos in to what that way after you land a hit you can follow up into another hit, Second being that you need to read your opponent, figure out what they are going to do and punish it, for example If an opponent that im facing tends to run up and try to hit me, shield-grab them. If they wait you out and make you approach and try to shield grab you, spot-dodge and punish, its basically a game of rock paper scissors there's always something that counters what your opponents going to throw out, thats why people love this game

2.) Look up videos on DI so you can see exactly how to DI some players dont understand it completely but its good that your on the right track, as for mixing things up what i do is i think what is this opponent going to be surprised by and it basically comes down to what your opponent thinks of you, if they think that your not that great, they wont expect you to throw out the best option, if they think your really good, they will expect you to throw out the best option, but thats really only the first stock, after that people start to pick up on your habits and your patterns so attempt to do something that you haven't done in the past 2 stocks.

3.) I see marth as a character that happens to bait an attack and then punish them but it all goes down to how do you want to play the game. It also depends on which character your facing and your opponent for that matter. all i can say is theres alot of different ways to play a character and that really stands true for marth. You can see it when you look at the pros. IMO i see Dr PeePee and M2K as more of agressive marth players where Ken and Azen tended to be a bit more defensive but its hard to tell since the community has grown so much since the days of Ken and Azen so it could just be the new marth. Anyways its really up to you and the way you want to play all i can say is watch alot of marth videos and pickup what you like, thats what i did

4.) Its hard to say it really depends on your teammate, his character, the people your playing, their characters, and the relationship you have with your teammate. IMO marth can be aggressive in teams but he cant really be mobile considering all of the spacies flying around so marth alone i would say is a punisher, work with your teammate because if you want marth on your dubs team you need one thing, TIPPER SPACING, learn how to space out the tipper so that you can land easy kills early thats basically all the advice i can give

Hope this helped somewhat

I think a good way to just get combos going is to punish. Be patient and space away from your opponent, unless of course you get in their head, but it takes practice to get good at predicting people. Marth's best combos are usually juggles out of grabs.
