Choosing a main

I know, another thread about choosing a main, but this one for me focuses on just three characters. Also, sorry if this is in the wrong spot, as you can see with this being my first post I didn't know exactly where it went.

I'm relatively new to the smash scene, only playing at college and home events, and still just can't decide on a main. I rotate between three characters, which I feel like actually hurts my play.

So, with this thread I'm sort of hoping to get what the community thinks of the characters I rotate; some odds in matchups, tips and tricks, mostly overall just how people feel about it to help me decide. I know I won't ever be at the top like Armada, Mango, HBOX, etc, but I do want to be the best I can locally.

I guess I'll start off by saying I don't like to play high-tier champions, high-tier being the obvious Fox, Falco, Shiek, Marth. I get bored watching and playing as them, they are just no fun for me. My top and absolute favorite three are Falcon, Doc, and Pikachu. Yes, I know there are still a lot of Falcons, but I just enjoy playing him and watching others play him and he has been the character I always played since I first played years ago.

Anywho, like I said, I'm kind of curious as to what people think of Pika, Falcon, and Doc. It can really be anything, I just want to see if I can find something that can help me pick out one of these three and get better as that character and at the game that we all love or any tips and tricks that may not be so known or obvious would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Play all 3 of them as much as you can until it becomes painfully obvious who your best character is. You will figure it out, not us

I think that 2-3 characters is actually a good pool to choose from. Obviously it'll take longer to learn each character, but unless you're trying to be the next EVO champion or something then it won't be too much of a detriment.

As for opinions on the characters, Falcon is my favorite (I'm biased) due to his speed and combo game, Doctor Mario is okay and Pikachu can be a contender in the right hands, however Pikachu is one of the harder characters to learn for a comparatively small reward.

What is it that you like about each of these characters?

Yeah, I guess I didn't really think of that. Most people I play with (usually the same group of people around my campus) ask me why I switch around a lot, like it's a bad thing. It could be good to have a pool for various match ups that I like.

Yeah, Axe has inspired me to play pika and I always loved watching Shroomed play doc. As for Falcon, he has always been my go to since I started the game and always been one of my favorites.

I guess I'm weird when it comes to what I like about each character. For Falcon, obviously his speed and combo game makes him very fun and also very viable. However, since I've been playing him for so long sometimes when I spam him for a long period of time, he gets rather boring. I would say I of the three I have the highest win rate with Falcon.

For Doc, I can't exactly pinpoint it, I just love his set overall. I play very smooth with him, it's just some of my matchups seem either impossible or I really need to practice. That being said, I still love playing Doc even when I lose.

Pika is easily my worst of the three, but like you said high ceiling for a not so high reward. This makes me want to play Pika more though because it's a "challenge." Once again, not something I could pinpoint that I like. I like the speed and power pika brings, but my edge guarding always sets me back (even though pika has some good options.)

If you choose to play Doc or Pika, be prepared for how much hard work and stress you'll have to endure if you play one of them. This may even happen with Falcon, but as you get better and run into better players, you'll probably reach a point where you feel your character choice is holding you back. That being said, the most important part of getting better is the journey to becoming a good player, so choose a character that you have fun playing because it's hard to improve if you are not enjoying playing. While having a main is always good, if your are not enjoying it because you feel as though playing one character is boring, you are probably limiting yourself simply because you are not having fun.

Don't just pick a character you are good with. Make sure you enjoy the character as well. It sounds like Doc is a good choice cause you said you enjoy him even if you lose. But just keep going with the pool of characters till one comes on top.
