Instead, let's focus on the potential characters and discuss which are likely to be in Smash 5. Just as Smash 4 before primarily focused on the Wii/DS generation, Smash 5 will inevitably focus on characters from the Wii U and 3DS generation.

The following series with potential candidates are:

Captain Toad from Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Professor E. Gadd from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

Yoshi series:
Kamek from Yoshi's Woolly World

Wario series:
Mona/Jimmy T./Ashley from Game & Wario

Donkey Kong series:
Dixie Kong from Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Legend of Zelda series:
Impa from Hyrule Warriors, Hyrule Warriors Legends, and possibly Zelda Wii U

Metroid series:
Sylux from Metroid Prime: Federation Force

Kirby series:
Bandana Dee from Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

Star Fox series:
Slippy/Peppy from Star Fox Zero

Pokemon series:

Haven't a good majority of characters listed appeared on a much older title (e.g. Captain Toad in the Galaxy games and Impa from OoT). For newcomers, they would have to actually look at characters who APPEARED in the 3DS/Wii U generation such as the Inklings, Wonder Red, Kamui/Corrin, etc.

I don't think a new entry improves the chances for a character that has already appeared in the past games of a particular series.

I'd be down for seeing a Codename Steam rep in Smash 5. It's a terribly underrated game that needs more love.

Sylux only appeared in Metroid Prime Hunters, and producer K. Tanabe confirmed he also made a cameo in Corruption.

It isn't confirmed he will make an appearance however iirc.
