Character using spirits vs one who's not in Smash mode?

Apologies if there's been another post on this but I could not find it.

I know when two characters with spirit teams fight each other, their attack and defense stats are compared to each other to determine the adjustment to damage.

What happens when a character with a primary spirit (lets assume no supports for simplicity) fights a character who doesn't have a spirit? For example, lets say we're in Smash mode with custom rule: spirits on, and one player chooses a spirit team and the other just leaves their tab at "no spirits". Is there a default attack and defense power, or is damage to and from un-spirited characters just not adjusted?

EDIT: to be more clear, here is a specific example: Player 1 is using Link with the Prince Richard primary spirit with no support spirits, so they have an attack stat of 1581 and a defense stat of 1217 with no special ability. Player 2 is playing Link with no spirits. Would there be any difference in that match compared to one where both Links were spiritless?

Spiritless characters do not have their stats altered. It’s just like with equipment in Smash 4.

I mean, equipment is what I'm trying to go for it was just easier to see the changes in the equipment system.

Supposedly, the following is the equation for characters attack each other with spirits (let me know if this is wrong):
[Total Damage] = [Base Damage] x [Type Multiplier] x [Attack Multiplier] / [Enemy Defense Multiplier]
  • Base Damage is the damage your attack would deal regularly, without spirits.
  • The Type Multiplier is 1.3 if you have the type advantage, 1 if you are neutral with the enemy's type, and 0.85 if you have the type disadvantage.
  • The Attack Multiplier is 1 + (0.4 x Your Attack / 1000)
  • The Enemy Defense Multiplier is 1 + (0.6 x Enemy Defense / 1000)
  • Additional notes: If your primary spirit is from the same series as your fighter, your spirit's Attack, Defense, and Power values are all multiplied by x1.1.
Each primary spirit has an attack and defense value (typically in the thousands) displayed when you look at them. I assume that is the value used for the calculation. I'm trying to figure out how spiritless characters fit into that equation since there's no stated attack and defense value.

AFAIK, spirits strictly boost stats. Even a spirit with only 1 point in a stat is one point added to the characters base stats. So a character without any spirits would be way underpowered against one with spirits.

After some testing it appears you are correct.
