Character Throw Detection and Collisions

I am wondering if anyone knows for certain how two characters interact when one grabs another? Is it by their bones at all?

For example, I already know after messing around with Snake's Dthrow that each character has a bone called "ThrowN" which determines the grabbed characters location throughout the whole grab and throw animation.

My guess how the games handles this is that the bone "ThrownN" on the thrower is overlapped with some bone on the opposing grabbed person. My question is what bone interacts with "ThrowN"? My guess is probably "TransN", but I am not sure.
